Recording foxtel IQ

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help.
I am trying to transfer some recordings from my IQ box to the PC for safekeeping, and for the life of me can’t get it right. I have the Vista media centre set up with 2 HVR-2200 tuner cards, and also have a PVR-150 in the box (not configured for use in media centre). I’m trying to capture the foxtel recordings in the wintv application. The transfer works fine with both of the TV cards via svideo, but only in 4:3, I can’t seem to get widescreen. I’ve played around with various settings in wintv, but with no luck. I know I can play around with the zoom, but I want to actually capture in widescreen.
Am I missing some setting in wintv, using the wrong software, or is what I’m trying not possible.

Peter

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

Been a while since I have done this (and not by your method) but isn't there a setting in the IQ box itself, rather than wintv, that controls how widescreen content is to be rendered depending on output device?

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

The only settings I'm aware of are the 16:9/4:3 settings in the foxtel box, which I've also played around with.

I basically want to get everying off the box as I'm thinking about IQ2, and its just driving me crazy!

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

Peter,

4:3 & 16:9 SD MPEG2s are the same resolution (720x576) - 16:9 is just anamorphic (stretched). With the MPEG2s(?) you are capturing, you can fairly easily change the header to 16:9. VideoReDo can do it on a pass, or you can use a tool called DVD Patcher (don't worry it's for any MPEG2, not only DVDs) - very simple.

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

You still having trouble with this Peter or is it solved? Because I transfer a ton of foxtel recordings to by box every day, and can give a hand if you want.

Btw, there is a way to capture in the 16:9 aspect ratio if you want.

Oh, and thanks Justin, hadn't ever seen that little proggy. Handy for existing mpg files.

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

Hi Ararat,

I’ve managed to get the programs off the IQ via either my HVR-2200 or PVR-150 using WINTV and then running it through VideoRoDo to change the aspect ratio. The process works fine, but there is a definite picture quality drop.

If you have a better way, i’d love some help.

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

Well, there's always going to be SOME quality drop when transferring to the computer (at least until they enable the eSATA ports on the STB, we'll see how that one goes), but I've found that contrary to popular belief (on my hardware at least), you can get significantly better quality with software encoders than with hardware.

Most hardware encoders seem to output 4:3 mpg files by default, with no way to change this, but by using WinFast PVR2 (the software that came bundled with my tuners, I guess your equivalent would be Hauppage WinTV), when software encoding, it encodes to the AR that you are currently viewing at (obviously make sure you have foxtel set to the same output).

I put out the foxtel signal over SD component cable, sound over SPDIF, and when put into a dvr-ms file in the recorded tv folder, with the computer's upscaling, it looks, in my opinion, better than watching it straight over HDMI from the foxtel box. This obviously doesn't apply to HD channels, which you MUST watch straight over HDMI to get the proper HD signal. But those SD channels which can look quite awful, look as good if not better through VMC when captured this way.

Re: Recording foxtel IQ

Thanks for the advice, at this stage, it seems like the best and easiest way of doing it is via my hard disk DVD recorder. Its a bit cumbersome, but there is very little picture quality loss.
