I have only just gotten around to installing a decent tuner card into my htpc and i'm quite confused at what i'm noticing with the foxtel stb.
The 2nd output connection seems to be only working in composite - when i plug in scart-component plugs it doesn't work - is this right or am i on something ??
That is immensely surprising and i'm now quite annoyed that i cannot get component out from foxtel into my htpc.
The other output is working via component - but i plug that into my receiver -> TV so that i can use it independently.
From what i can see there is no other type of component connections that i can use to split the signal, so that 1 of them can be fed into the htpc .
The second scart (labelled VCR) is composite or s-video only (it will only output s-video when s-video is the nominated output - whenever anything else is selected it will be composite). There is a simple reason as to why they didn't add component output to that scart - when the box was designed, there wasn't anything that could record component.
The solution is a scart splitter (e.g. Jaycar AC-1604 - $7). Not the best solution, but it should work.
It's a good idea to still use the audio out of the VCR scart though, as it has fixed volume (the TV scart has variable volume).
BTW: I don't think youy can get component in to VMC anyway (you'll need to use 3rd party software).

Great info Justin - much appreciate your help.
Do you mean component wont work in media centre ? If so that is not my concern as I only want to do the recordings within Vista itself - i don't have the time to concern myself with getting foxtel working in VMC
Have you seen those scart splitters anywhere else ? Dick Smith ?
Do you say its not the best option because of a quality downgrade ?

Yes, that's what I mean. No probs then.

Haven't seen them at DSE. Seen them online a bit.
As they're just a passive splitter, and it's an analogue signal, there's a chance of degraded signal. I never noticed it using one back when I had a CRT TV, but an HD TV might show it up. You can get active ones for around $100 that should eliminate any issues, but the Jaycar one is worth a shot - the cabling inside them is decent quality, so it will probably fine.
