have you got the MCE remote and reciever. Use that to change channels as the MCE reciever wont traslate austar remote without some tinkering to transate IR commands
I went and bought a Cheap universal remote and none of the codes on that would change the Austar Box either. There must be a work around or something for these boxes I cant believe this whole set up is reliant on a remote

How do you have Austar connected to your MCE - is it via svideo (cable) or antenna?
I have my Austar (it's a atlas which is stated on left hand side of the box) connected via svideo and during the setup it prompts you to learn you remote and for it to recognise it I had to basically hold the remote about 1cm (if not closer) in front of the MS IR receiver.
Once setup you can use your MS remote to change the stb and not have to worry about using the Austar Remote.
Note: setting it up this way (via svideo) will result in losing FTA channels though and only display PayTV only.
If you are connecting via Antenna then you'll get FTA and can tune in a paytv channel but you'll require the Austar remote to change the austar channels on the paytv channel.
I've had my Austar setup under XPmce and now Vista and the Austar remote works fine. Must be very frustrating as you can see that it works for a few of us so it shows the hardware is compatible.
If you haven't then try upgrading to Vista. Also a long shot but change the batteries for the remote
