Vista Media Centre + Austar + Happauge HVR-1300 Help

Hi Everyone,

I have a bit of a problem....

I have 2 x Happauge HVR-1300's and i wanted to set them up so that i can have Digital TV / Austar running at the same time...

I read the write up on how to get analog / digital working together and i am working through that but i cant seem to setup austar...

No matter what option i choose in setting up tv signal i cant get it working (Sat, Cable or antenna)

I have the austar box connect via RCA to the back of the HVR. I live in tasmania and the austar boxes down here are digital to the satellite then analog to the tv.

If anyone can help i would be soooooo soooo grateful

Cheers

Iain

Re: Vista Media Centre + Austar + Happauge HVR-1300 Help

You have 2 HVR-1300's.. Have you tried plugging it into the other one? VMC will "forget" that you've configured one card for digital once you go to set it up again.

I use 1 HVR-1300 for the analog capture, and a different card for the digital signal.. I'm not sure if the "hack" to get digital and analog working together will work when you have 2 of the same cards, and you want to use one for analog and the other for digital.

In theory it should, but it's an unknown factor for me.

Re: Vista Media Centre + Austar + Happauge HVR-1300 Help

thanks for that..

i am new to using MCE, when you go through the setup tv signal. Should i just do the setup once setting up austar via svid / analog on one tuner then do the setup again for digital using one tuner?

Then if i wanted to run digital on the austar HVR use the reg hack to do so.

Cheers

Also its connected via 3 x rca, i am going to try svideo tonight when i get home. On another note, do you have yours setup as just an analog card or both?

cheers

For me, it worked with either Cable or Sat - both assume you have a Set Top Box which allows you to set up a IR Blaster.

I've had it working on both S-Video and Composite, although I discovered the SCART to S-Video converter plug I used caused problems with high white scenes (the whole picture would start to shudder and I'd lose audio - if you see this problem once you get it working, it'll be the converter). As such I've gone back to Composite, and just never saw the need to buy a different brand of converter.

The HVR-1300 is what's called a Hybrid card - it has a single tuner on it, which can be *either* analog or digital, not both at the same time. As such, you need to tell Windows how you want to use it. For the record, FM radio uses the tuner as an analog tuner.

In theory, following Wixkidder's procedure, you should be able to set up DTV on Card 2, export the Tuners from the registry, then set up Analog TV on Card 1 (this actually blows away VMC's knowledge of the DTV, which is why you need to re-import the tuners once you've finished the Analog setup).

For my HVR-1300, after I told VMC I was setting up an Analog signal, VMC checked on all my Composite and S-Video connectors for a signal, and showed me the working input signal in a small window.

When I first set it up, I was using S-Video, and the picture was all grey and had lines through it - I fixed that by going into the System menu on the Foxtel STB and changed the output to S-Video (maybe you need to look in there yourself and try changing some of the outputs).

I'm not sure why you're not picking up the picture - possibly because you have 2 of the same type of card, and it thinks both are planned to be used for DTV..

Re: Vista Media Centre + Austar + Happauge HVR-1300 Help

I have yet to get a signal from my austar box, would this be because of something to do with it or something to do with the way i set it up in VMC? I am going to try SVID tonight as with RCA i havent been able to get anything.

Thanks everyone for the help

Well, which connectors are you plugging into your VMC? If you take the same connectors that were previously working on your TV and plug them into your PC, then you should know those connectors are carrying a signal.

I believe I'm using the "VCR" connector on my Foxtel STB, which is always active.

BTW, the best way to "thank" people here is with the shiny "Thanks" button :P

Re: Vista Media Centre + Austar + Happauge HVR-1300 Help

Hey Auldar,

I have got it working through RCA's at the moment and had it setup last night. I am just going to do the digital / analog setup tonight when i get home, just needed it at work to download the tv guide as i dont have the net at home at current.

I will see how it goes tonight

Also is there a way to speed up the blaster? at the moment its on fast but doesnt seem to be fast :P

Cheers

Re: Vista Media Centre + Austar + Happauge HVR-1300 Help

It's actually advisable to set the IR blaster to "Slow".. Any faster, and you risk it failing to change channels for you, which will likely result in you recording the wrong channel :P

Also, when setting up your remote, I *highly* recommend teaching VMC every button.. When you first set it up, it tells you to just press and hold "0". This appears to work, but eventually you'll find that VMC will have difficulty changing to certain channels (for me the worst was 132 - SciFi).

Just tell VMC it's not working properly when it asks you to test changing channels, and eventually it will ask you to press and hold each button a few times. After I did this, it's pretty much 100% success changing channels.
