A recent update (two weeks ago) on my MythBuntu box (backend) causes this error:

Essentially, linux-image is not being updated. Now other packages are failing to install because I cannot resolve the original problem.
I have exhausted google and various help forums. No one seems to know what's going on. Looks like a rebuild or restore - all the suggestions offered so far seem little more than "clutching at straws".
I see these things as the Linux weakness - frustratingly obscure errors to which there seem to be no answers. This is probably the third or fourth such error that I've had over the years that seemed to have no solution other than a re-install.
Cheers

Not being a command line guru, my idea would be to try and load the previous kernel and do your fixing from there.
It might be as simple as, editing your /boot/grub/menu.lst and commenting out the 2.6.24-19 kernel, so it boots from the previous one.
or
Hit escape at the grub menu and try load the previous kernel from there.
Once in, then try removing or fixing the 19 kernel in synaptic or at the command line.

No joy on that one, Lester. That's the one of the first things we tried.

I sense you were lurking, just waiting for something like this, right?

Tell me you weren't using auto update on a working rig?
This is why I don't use ubuntu. It's too much like windows.
Can you post up your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. All is not lost. Just need to do some repairs.
No., I invoked the update. I wanted the latest kernel 'coz I'm inclined that way
Seriously though, are you saying that I should be delving into menu.lst instead of grub.conf?
I hadn't tried that, so I will this evening. I'll post menu.lst if I get stuck.
Thanks
