Sting in the tail. This is the free edition. There's also an unlimited Enterprise edition which he's charging $39.00 for and getting a lot of flack for as well (see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ight=earos).:D

Notice how there's no support link on the site. Looks like that's what they'd be charging for, I reckon.
And he doesn't exactly state what it is that makes the earos distro special.
We wish him well, but I think I'll pass.
Cheers

Just read through that. Puerile comes to mind, which doesn't exactly help to endorse the product.

This is amazing. Arkay if you happen to read this:
I am watching Collingwood - Carlton from within eAr OS FROM THE LIVE CD.
The pro's:
Once booted, it took about 5 minutes to set it up.
Did not need any drivers whatsoever with my Avermedia tuner or ATI graphics card.
The only setting needed was AU.Melbourne
Scanning all channels under 1 minute.
FRee EPG, all channels there without setting anything up.
TV recorded in m2t files
The con's:
Pic a bit on the dark side
HD stuttering, remember, this is from a Live CD
Could not get the media centre interface to work, so I recorded from within Kaffeine.
Well. It's certainly interesting. Out of the box on a live CD I had 1280x720 desktop, audio working (after changing mixer settings), dvb-t working (after tuning in Kaffeine). Though I didn't get channel 9.
Oh, and the MCE remote was working out of the box.
Interestingly it seems to use Kaffeine for all media playback.
Certainly a nice effort but it lacks in cohesion. i.e. It's one app running that calls other apps for media playback. Meedio style.
I can't see me ditching MCE for it though. It's just not spiffy enough and the dvb-t quality I was getting was terrible. Blocky artifacts. I got much better than that last time I installed Myth on OpenSuse (actually, no difference to MCE as it should be for digital).
As far as Linux is concerned I still think you're better off doing it yourself. Taking the time and learning how it all goes together and ironing out problems as you go along. That way you end up with a more stable solution that you understand how to fix if/when problems arise.
I like the polish in terms of graphics etc on this distro. It's quite pleasing to look at but one thing all these out of the box solutions lack is a complete solution. Startup/shutdown, scheduling, recording and all format media playback have to be taken into consideration. It has to be an appliance and as easy to use as one.

There's a setting to increase the quality. This unfortunately requires more cpu power.

Neither would I But it still is a handy thing. It just amazes me how easy it is to set it up compared what we are used to with mce2005. No problems with channel scanning or EPG.
I installed Kaffeine in my existing Mint Elyssa OS and the same fast set up was possible. I noticed more artifacts in live tv though.
I would conclude:
Makes you wonder why mce isn't that easy to set up
Nice to toy with and very usable as Os (Ubuntu 8.04 based)
Looks nice, fast working launcher from toolbar
Needs a better decoder
Wonder what the Pro version contains. Should have a trial version.
It is interesting and compared to MCE2005 it is easy if you have supported tuners.
Vista is another story though and as much as I loathe Vista as an OS Vista MCE is very simple to setup. That's not a case of it being better, just a case of it being up to date with the OS. i.e. You don't have to apply a million patches and tweaks as they come pre-done in the new OS. If MS were to bother supporting MCE along with XP's extended life it too would be just as easy to set up. Alas that's the problem with commercial apps like MCE. If you want the latest, buy Vista. There is no ongoing support for MCE2005.
Linux is sooo capable as a media OS, it just needs the perfect integrated application. XBMC will be it if ever it gets full PVR functionality.
