Myth Re-visit and HDTV

I have spent a couple of weekends setting up a MC pc .
Running linux & Myth TV on my new pc.
I have played with the following linuxes my favorites first.
OpenSUSE 10.3, Mandriva 2007.1 (old Mandrake user), PCLinuxOS 2007, Fedora 6(hardest to install on my hardware), Ubuntu
I have also tested F.First MythDora (Easer to install than Fedora) works but see note *1.
....Mythbuntu works but see note *1 ...and also knoppmyth which I could not get running,
Note 1. I have been able to record 2 HD channels at the same time one on each winfast DVT1000 T But my mythtv front end will not show HD Channels or play HD recordings,
Have successfully used Windows XP and Winfast software to watch and record HD .
On same PC with the screen downsampled (lower resolution) as using 1024x768 on old vga screen. But before I go out and by a new 26 or 32' LCD display .. with HDMI,VGA and component imputs I would like to know if any one else has got the DVT1000 T's working in high Def on MythTv.
Cheers for any feedback or help / Sugestions

Re: Myth Re-visit and HDTV

Hi,

The problem is more likely to be with your video card and/or drivers. Which are you
using?

Re: Myth Re-visit and HDTV

Thanks for the fast response
The graphics intergrated on the Motherboard.
And I am using Intel 945 Drivers.
Will double check that linux is using 945 Drivers in X Windows.
Will check xorg.conf. I was looking at getting SD working first.
But considering XP was working fine playing 7HD,9HD and 10HD.
And the recoding of 10 HD looks fine in the small playback window on mythdora.
I was looking at Upgrading the video to a separate card later if required.
And also looking at upgrading my tv to a 32' LCD display.
But due to work commitments upgrading my TV was only worth while if I got myth working properly (read stable for SD and HD) the fact that BattleStar Galactica was on 10HD.
And that I have to record it on XP at the moment means I have not axed XP yet.

Re: Myth Re-visit and HDTV

I don't know a whole lot about 945 in linux, but I do think that is probably where your problem lies. A quick search around the Ubuntu or other linux forum will tell you more. Nvidia seem to be the only brand that are able to make the full capabilites of their cards available to the linux user. You don't need to spend a whole lot to do HD in Myth, I'm using a GF6200, something similar should cost no more than about $50.

But definately check if the Intel linux drivers are up to the job first.

Re: Myth Re-visit and HDTV

It's been my experience that if it works in XP it'll work in Myth. Recording of DTV is only dumping the stream to the HDD so if it works in Windows it should work in Linux without fault. The only thing effecting that would be drivers but I'd think if it works for SD, HD should be no problem.

Playback sounds like the real issue. There's a few things that may affect that. The video card being one of them though I doubt that would be the issue if it works in XP.

3 that I can think of would be:

1. HDD and/or filesystem type. Might be effecting the speed at which the stream is coming from the disk. Something to look into. Try some file copies and see what disk transfer rates you are getting. (Mind you it'd have to be really slow to stop you playing a single HD stream).

2. What settings are you using for deinterlacing in Myth? Some of them can be very processor intensive. What is your CPU utilisation when trying to play HD?

You can figure is out by opening a shell and using the command "top" or vmstat before running Myth and playing a HD clip. Top gives you real time stats. I would probably use "vmstat 1 60 > cpu.txt". That will record data every second for 60 seconds into a file called cpu.txt. The last 4 figures on the right of the output give you cpu utilisation, whether it's a user or system process as well as the idle time and wait time (time the CPU spends idle waiting for other events like disk requests etc). That could give you more of an idea of what is happening.

Try different deinterlace methods and see what difference it makes.

3. Audio drivers. SD/HD has AC3 audio used in some broadcasts. It might be that your audio driver is struggling with these causing problems that only present in a HD stream (due to higher bandwidth).. maybe.

Some things to look at anyway.

You also say that your Myth frontend is unable to play HD. Are you using 2 machines (one back end, one front?) It could be a networking issue if that is the case.

Can you post your exact specifications of the rig(s)?

Cheers,

Arkay.
