livetv query

Currently running vista mce with a 360 extender. The 360 does a pretty good job at changing channels remotely on the foxtel unit via vista and watching streamed tv.

I then decided I wanted another pc to do the same thing. I'm currently running mediaportal on xp. This machine doesnt have a tuner card (my vista machine does all that)

I just want the xp machine running mediaportal to be able to view the recorder shows on the vista machine and to also change channels and view live tv just like my 360 does.
I shared out the folder in vista and the xp machine can see it but refuses to play any dvrms files when I select them when using mediaportal? Xp does - just not mediaportal.
As this machine doesnt have a tuner card I cant seem to set the network shares for recorded tv. I was accessing the dvrms files via the movies section

Any ideas on how to do this - is it even possible?

Re: livetv query

I think you're probably trying to do something that isn't possible.

There was a rumoured software version of Media Center Extender called Softsled, but it has never appeared.

You can do the reverse of what you're trying to do (i.e. have MediaPortal as the backend & MCE as the front end) by using a MediaPortal plug-in for MCE.

Re: livetv query

DVR-MS files are MS's proprietary format for tv recording. I do know that MediaPortal used to be able to play these files but i believe that the playback has been broken now for a little while.

I guess the only way to play it on the MediaPortal system would be to convert them using something like MCEBuddy until it is fixed (if it ever is).

I was about to recommend MCEBuddy I think its great! Been working a treat for me, it seems to get stuck though when ticking the ad cut out feature, otherwise seems okay... what issues did u have?

Re: livetv query

for some reason I actually thought that mediaportal actually recorded in dvrms?

What I dont get is - is that mediaplayer can play it - so obviously the codecs are installed. I tried making mediaplayer the default player in MP but no good. Is it because I dont have a tuner card installed so its not going to let me do anything with recorded tv? Even though I want to access recorded tv on a different drive?
