Re: Comparison of 3 MythLinux Distros

Good read.

My next home theatre pc will more than likely be a mythdora version. I run fedora 7 on my main desktop, another one runs ubuntu.

I tried to download it today- a thankless task. Download speed < 15kbps

Gave up.

Re: Comparison of 3 MythLinux Distros

Okay I've got MythDora installed. I don't give a rats about live TV I want to use MythTV to play my divx files from a WHS box...... how do I do that? I can see the smb shares using Fedora's network browser but I don't know what to do next.

  • Fire up PC

  • A few prompts and 15 minutes later, I'm in MythTV
  • It tells me I have 2 X Dvicos
  • I select the Dvico remote from a list
  • I run the MythTV setup

Now, here's the stunner: It bloody works!!!

I was pleased with KnoppMyth, but where it refused to play with my Ultraviews, MythDora gets it right first time.

As I said, this is very un myth/ linux like. I better pinch myself. Maybe I'm just dreaming.

Re: Comparison of 3 MythLinux Distros

mythdora is fantastic.

i installed mythtv in dual boot mode with mce - i had to lose mythtv unfortunately after the missues started wanting to watch tv giving me no time to setup myth

the main issue with linux is the drivers and getting them all to work together. mythdora has all the necessary kernel mode modules for a wide range of tv tuner cards. previous to this you had to compile and build them yourself. the compiling and building wasn't so bad, but if you're device wasn't supported (i.e. my hauppague Nova-T 500 on an old 2.6.18 kernel circa Fedora Core 6) you had nothing... and had to wait for a kernel update (which is okay on fedora) or compile the module yourself from source.

configuring the back-end and front-end is so much easier now it's great. the open source codecs and mpeg2 decoders have been tweaked and optimised by so many people that they are comparable and even equal to many commercial mpeg2 decoders/codecs. Just check doom9

You could play them from a command line

by default mythdora sets up you're videos and recordings in /storage you can either copy the files to there for playing back just to test or you may need to create a symlink

If thats the solution then the only command line im interested in is "fdisk". Actually if I have to enter ANY command line at all then its not worth the bother.
