XBMC Linux updates.

Just been doing a bit of checking and progress has been nothing short of amazing so far.

Most interesting thread can be found here.

Off to see if I can get it to compile in Suse... If not I might have to put ubuntu on a spare partition just to take a look

Cheers,

Arkay.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Rad. I'll have to watch this one.

I've been planning to upgrade my current setup but there is no way I'm going the vista route. As a developer I just can't bring myself to it.

Anyway I have let my HTPC reading slip since I got a stable MC2005 setup and I must say your rater epic MythTV thread was a good (long) read. The no PCIe is a bit poor, however after some reading over the weekend it seems there are still some good PCI tuners out there that could be suatible for anything Linux based.

Do post on here if you mess around with the XBMC port. I've had that sucker running on Xbox for years and years, infact it was what made me investigate HTPC rather than a settop box a while ago. Awesome application.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Just got about 3/4 of the way through compiling on Opensuse 10.2 but hit a snag I can't figure out...

Consequently I'm downloading Ubuntu 7.04 as I type this Always good to keep a spare partition available to install another distro

As it's being developed on Ubuntu 7.04 and I've never really given ubuntu a go I may as well take a look.

Cheers,

Arkay.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Ubuntu is like Windows for Linux (but way better of cause). Its a great distro for desktops, just don't touch the server edition (IMO).

Sounds good mate. And from reading that link you posted it seems like this will be a well document/supported project. Always a good thing.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Well ALRIGHT! keep the updates coming arkay, I see this project alone as a reason to use linux on a machine. It even seems like PS3MC is now a lot closer to being realised! AS soon as the team polishes the XBMC port off and adds tuner support it will be THE best MC platform bar none.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Yeah, I saw yuvalt's post around the time he posted it.. I couldn't believe how much progress they had made either..

They still have some work to do, but they're at a point I was sure would take close to a year..

Quote:
Just a bit more information on what is new in the last couple of weeks:

1. Music playback is 100% working, including gapless for MP3 and FLAC, including fade in/out. Many codecs are already supported except for a few less common ones. List of codecs is in the wiki linux project page.
2. Video playback is working with the latest FFmpeg (which means some WMV9 and H264 support). This is done using the dvdplayer module. For now we are NOT porting mplayer but rather spending the effort on polishing dvdplayer and finishing it's missing features (subtitles, better streaming, etc). Video playback is done with OpenGL Pixel Shaders for the RGB->YUV and has been tested to work on NVidia and ATI. For older OpenGL implementations (such as Intel) there is software color space conversion.
3. Python is mostly working including video streaming, sounds, keyboard and mouse. Still a bit shaky but it's getting there.
4. Scrapers are working (IMDB, TV, etc).
5. Library is working including searches.
6. SMB and XBMSP file systems are working.
7. Picture viewing and slide shows.
8. Remote control support using LIRC.
9. Visualization, including ProjectM, which is MilkDrop compatible.

XBMC for Linux is getting stabler and more useful every day. We are continuing to enhance and stabilize it.

I want to thank everyone in the Team-XBMC who worked hard to reach this point.

-Yuval

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Just finished setting up Ubuntu 7.04.

BTW if anyone has an Nvidia card download this: http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html It will install and setup everything you need to get your Nvidia card up and running in Ubuntu.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

This is very promising.

These are the guys that should be working with Mythtv as well.

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

Ok.. Got ubuntu installed on the laptop at work (and fully configured).

Installed the source for XBMC, compiled, copied a couple of files across to the base XBMC folder and ran it...

Wooooooow!!!! This thing is slick. The interface is awesome. Fast and user friendly.

So far I've been able to play some avi files but haven't set up music or pics.

It's obviously got a lot of bugs still and have had a few crashes etc but I'm amazed at how far they've come already and how well things work (for those things that do).

I'm seriously impressed. When this gets completed we all might have a lot of spare time on our hands!

The executable generated is only 69KB in size! The entire install is only 563MB.

from what I've read they're writing this so it will need NO underlying window manager. Theoretically you should be ablet o run if straight off a usb key....

Will definately be following the progress on this...

Cheers,

Arkay.

P.S. Now that I've turned the ubuntu install into a KDE base I have to say that I'm impressed with ubuntu too! Very snappy

Re: XBMC Linux updates.

With no window manager, F$%K! now that gave me goosebumps. Arkay 560 odd MB for the entire install? Os and all? If thats the case then an almost instant on STB device is the next step/evolution. loading it up on am iRam should be an interesting test don't you think?
