MythTV: Backends and Frontends

When the XP MCE got kicked out of the lounge to the shed I stuck Ubuntu and MythTV on it.

I have it working pretty well.

Now, question- do I understand correctly that if I stick the DBTV cards etc on a server and make it the backend I should be able to access the goodies from a client with the MythTV frontend on it?

If so, how robust it it? Can you actually switch channels? What about remote controls?

BTW, she glared at me when I asked if I could "test" the MythTV box on the big plasma thingie in the lounge. Looks like the XP MCE memories linger...

You get full control via a MythTV front end including channel change and Remote control.

I suppose I'd need to go full on wired network?

Re: MythTV: Backends and Frontends

For HD, for sure. Although, I have my Myth backend and a couple of frontends hard wired to my network, and I also have a frontend on a laptop that I connect via wifi and it mostly works! The exact same hardware under MCE 2005 streaming HD recoded TV never worked well.

I will qualify all this by saying that as soon as someone starts the microwave it all goes to sh*t.
