Re: PS3MC on the way!

Now you see that is interesting. Wake up MS and let the homebrew market work with your console legally then modchip makers and isntallers wont have a leg to stand on.

Re: PS3MC on the way!

This is bloody fantastic news! Whats the best this is going to be the shot in the arm that the PS3 needs. the PS3 has much more advanced hardware that the XBOX1 so full HD will finally be possible on the xMC platform.

it is quite interesting, because it is basically XBMC, with a lot more muscle (meaning True HD, maybe), with a BD player, and easily interchangeable hard drive

would this connect with a Media Center computer though? i know nothing about XBMC

EDIT: i just searched it, and wow!, what an impressive piece of kit, if they couyld get the Wi-Fi working then they could have streaming from a Media Center computer (although Live TV would still be a problem) It definitely seems to be a very impressive semi-MCE extender

Re: PS3MC on the way!

AS extreme will attest XBMC is the reason anyone still buys and flash xbox 1. It really really rocked and its User interaface beats all comers and is completly skinnable.

The way the developers were talking dont be suprised that if/when Sony allow linux users to properly utilise graphics and cpu chips in the PS3 that you will be able to attach USB HDTV tuners to the ps3 and use MythTV style bak to a omputer if need be.

Very clever sony, in this way you have MS beat.

Re: PS3MC on the way!

now all we need is an "MS Boss" slagging it off

homebrew, when done well, can rock the damn world... (flashes back to humma kavalas PSP UMD ripper/ loader)

I wonder who it was that pushed kutaragi to chuck in ps3 linux compatability....

methinks it has something, perhaps alot to do with their plans to set up PSHome network infrastructure....but I could be just dreaming....since when do linux based servers play any important part in linking gamers across the world ??? [/sarcasm]

dang, if you could get tv and extended media functionality via your ps3, and make it all manageable and easy to set up - then MS and mediacenter have a really strong contender - the open source factor makes it even tastier to ones palate.

Re: PS3MC on the way!

The sole reason the XBOX1 outsold the PS1 and 2 was the ability to mod it and put xbmc and or linux on it, With the XBOX 360 MS closed the barn doors good and tight, Sony on the otherhand actually learned a thing or two from the past and embraced the aftermarket prospects. The PS3 over time will become one of those products that garners a cummunity behind it, 360's will just gather dust a short time from now.

Re: PS3MC on the way!

No doubt sony have done this smart.

They can now clainm "Well games are region free, we let you run linux which allows homebrew applications you dont need modchips therefore illegal "

I think they have still left Blu Ray region locked which was stupid as that was one of the main reasons Aust courts ruled in the favour of modchips.

Bunni (guy who hacked xbox 1 to pieces and wrote a book on it) spoke with microsoft recently. They had a sit down discussion session also including the guy who found the hipervisor vunerability in king kong game for 360. They came out saying MS was serisouly looking into ways ot allow homebrew development ot occur without openoing up console too much.
