Are you simply assuming that I said that for the fun of it !!!
salvage parts are free extreme !!! You just need to be networked with the right places, and if you are a regular at uni gaming LANs there is an amazing amount of swapping and trading to be done. im sure you remember uni days, theres not much money to go around, so you get things by bartering old stuff you have
Ive helped so many gamers build rigs, my payment often is, "I'll do your overclock/watercooler setup, can you give me that old cpu and we'll call it even?!"
From where Im sitting right now I can see I have an nvidia 6200, 6600 and 7300 sitting on a shelf in my workstation(in their little anti stat bags).
Just last week someone gave me their old 17" LCD after helping them with an extensive wired + wireless setup

(I gave that to my sister) It was sitting in a garage until then.
Most of the bits and PCs I collect during the course of a year(mainly at end of financial year) end up refurbed and sent off to friends kids or MRCs(migrant resource centres) etc. However, I do manage to put aside somnething each year for a particular project. The pentium D dual core in my shuttle(my main VMC rig) was sitting in a derelict workstation pc at a local small business....!! it was going to get chucked in the bin ! (HDD was stuffed, as it was upgrade time - they didnt bother with it...
If building an MCE rig - The only thing I ever need to go and buy is that damn remote! $50
Sure you could say my time has a value, but Im not an IT person - and I do most of this stuff when Im out and about anyway.
