Re: Linux Mce

Looks interesting but not sure if it would pass the WAF.
This product certainly goes far beyond what MCE is designed to provide.
As for his comments it is all subjective.

Re: Linux Mce

Well I have to say that it certainly looks quite sensational to me. If it's half as easy to set up as the video suggests and supports HD TV etc then I'm guessing I may have to delay my Vista trial a bit longer. It's good to see they have integrated Myth which means I can keep my Ice subscription and basically do everything else at no cost.

Hmmm... My NAS box might just turn into a LinuxMCE box some time soon!

Re: Linux Mce

Gee, do you think he had any bias?

Couple of points...
I don't want any piece of software automatically downloading a control program (or anything else) into my phones automatically.

No matter how fast the interface is, you can't brwose through 100,000 hours of online content in any guide in "a couple of minutes".

I like the revolving cube for selections.

The "air mouse" would drive me nuts. Unintuitve, error prone, and RSA-inducing.

I'm happy he's happy.

LinuxMCE... lol..

Here's some of my thoughts on this godawful mess... Please note I was judging this purely on the google video and the guy's severe case of MCE envy - and is not a 'review' of pluto or the other 3rd party bits that were in there.. (which could work quite well with a decent UI).

Re: Linux Mce

Yes in truth I wouldn't take much notice of his ramblings and obvious prejudice. It is a sales pitch after all. What I thought was interesting was the platform. I'm given to believe that Linux is a more stable platform than Windows and requires significantly less resources. All of this at zero cost. That being the case I would think there would be a market for it although I'm quite suspicious about some of his claims. (Some of them seem extremely fanciful at best) Mind you I see the Myth integration as being a bit of a plus although I'm not familiar with it. The reason being that IceTV is supported. If I get the time I will definitely have a look at it before going down the Vista path even if only to satisfy my curiosity.

P.S. To be fair, on reading some of the criticisms in Niall's blog I had to agree with much of it. In fact I went back and reviewed the video just to satisfy myself and I certainly agree that it's not really a 10' interface. The readability really is poor and I guess unless they fix things like that it's unlikely I would trial it but none the less I think it's a pretty good first up attempt despite the farcical sales pitch and I'll probably keep a close eye on development.

Read your blog...excellent points.

I meant to mention as well about this "comparison" being flawed since, as you say, the LinusMCE is a 2' (or less) experience rather than a 10' one.

There's a reason why there isn't as much information displayed at once in WMCE....you can't read it from the couch!

Not yet Oz. I've got too much on my plate at home to muck around with Vista or anything else at the moment. Besides which I just built myself a Media Server from the remnants of my old dead MCE box and that also consumed any spare cash for the time being so I'll probably wait a bit longer.
