Media Extenders and NAS

Hi -

I have a simple question about these devices as I have neither, I am interested in setting them up, but I do not want to get burnt.

I currently have an HTPC with internal raid drives.

Let's say I purchase a NAS unit with it's own drives and attach this to the network. I know my HTPC will see and use the drives on the NAS.

Now I purchase a Media Extender (LinkSys DA*).

As I want to keep my HTPC in 'sleep mode' (I think it's referred to as 'S3'), question is:

- Will my Media Extender be able to play the RecordedTV, Music and DVD's stored on the NAS drives irrespective of the 'sleep state' of my HTPC, or must it attempt to wake it up my HTPC via WOL methods ?

Put differently, is it the case that Media Extenders can only talk to Media Centers, or can Media EXtenders talk directly to data on the NAS (bypassing the Media Center power issue) ??

Thanks

Re: Media Extenders and NAS

If by Media Extender you mean Media Center Extender, then yes the Media Center PC must be on. If you don't care whether you have the Media Center GUI, then you can get some other network device capable of streaming media from the NAS.

Note also that the Linksys DMA2x00 Media Center Extenders don't send WoL. So you either have to manually turn the PC on, leave it on 24/7, or use the utterly ghey Away Mode.

You will also find that you will need to create logon scripts for your MCX user account to map the NAS drives otherwise you may not be able to add the shared folders. When the time comes you will find searching the Extenders area of this forum will turn up all the info you need.
