Hey guys, I'm a newbie, this forum is great, well done on it.
I'm on the lookout for a media centre extender for XP. I've got MCE on my XP Machine which is currently set up as the Media Centre. It has live tv and foxtel running through it connected to a standard 4:3 television. Renovations are due and we cant justify spending thousands on tv/dvd at this stage...
Want to extend this media centre and all features into the tv/monitor into the bedroom. having a look at Linksys DMA2100 extender but it looks like it's only compatible with XP.
I need a media centre extender for xp! I have read a few sites and the xbox 360 has one, but I don't need one!
My desktop computer in the study is HD compatible and runs the picture beautifully. It also has Vista MCE installed on it. Is moving this computer into the loungeroom the only way we can extend the signal into the bedroom. We have a flat and don't want to go down the wiring process...
For MCE2005, the Xbox 360 is your only option. Someone will pop & tell you that there are old HP & Linksys extenders - forget about them, they're next to useless for our TV standards & are useless for HD.
You can go for the cheapest Xbox 360 & set it to start MCX straight up, so you never use it as an Xbox.
The DMA2100/2200 are only extenders for Vista MC.

Thanks I thought this was the answer. I am very disappointed as I don't want an Xbox and I've heard rumours it's very noisy. Oh well, we'll have to find some other way!
Oh sorry, HD is not neccesary as we also have an old tv in the bedroom we can use... Guessing there is still nothing available.
Same story.

Why have they made the new extenders only good for Vista. It is very annoying.
The technology that they're built on (apart from the XBox) is called Pika, & it seems to be pretty Vista specific. The reverse happened with the old extenders in that they can't be used with Vista (they were North American only models).

From what youve described about your setup and circumstances, one of those older MCXs might get you by.. the problem is finding one! I sold mine 2 years ago for $80 You probably could dig a used one up on ebay from the US, but you can imagine the inherent dangers there... and the extra postage cost! You'd end up paying $200ish for something that may not work/work the way you like... it'd be a bit of a gamble. Of course, there'd be no warranty either!
A vista HP upgrade and a new extender wouldnt be a huge stretch on the wallet... $350ish... (as long as your current pc hardware is vista compliant)
