Since installining Linksys my PC won't sleep

I have VMC SP1 and just added the Linksys DMA2200 extender, now everytime I try to send my PC into suspend it just reports "Going to Away mode" and it just sits there on full power?

I don't believe I have anything running and I have left it like that for several hours

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Since installining Linksys my PC won't sleep

Hey Alec,

This is a known and common problem. I have the same issue.

Do a search for DMA2200 and magic packet...... or similar and you will find more detailed / better explanation. But the long and the short of it (from my understanding) is that the "Wake up" packet doesn't wake the media centre, and you are stuck leaving it on all the time.

If you find a solution, i would love to hear it also.....very keen to know.

Thanks

Adam

Re: Since installining Linksys my PC won't sleep

Hey Adam, thanks for the reply.

Whilst I understand that the DMA2200 won't wake up the PC the main issue I have is that I can't set it to sleep (even from the PC itself).!

Is this also a "known" issue or is this something else?

Re: Since installining Linksys my PC won't sleep

Hey Alec,

Again, no expert, but my understanding is when you setup the extender, you have to select the method of sleep / wakeup with the media centre. When you do this, it changes the ability to suspend.

Not sure though....sorry.

I leave mine on 24/7. Way less than ideal given the small amount of time we spend using the extender, but waiting for a fix. Very happy with the linksys but for this & slow / crappy remote response.

Actually, it's easy to fix.

Go into your Power options, and right down the bottom is an option for "While sharing media"

Set it to "allow system to go to sleep".

PS. My Media Center is sleeping right now so I can't get you the exact terms etc. You'll see it though.

Re: Since installining Linksys my PC won't sleep

Well the problem of the PC not going to sleep has been resolved (I can atleast invoke sleep by pressing the button).

As long as it wakes as per scheduled recording times and shuts down on itself after completing the recording or the maximum inactivity timer then based on the fact that the Linksys doesn't support WOL I suspect that is the best we can hope for.

Thanks for the answer.

Re: Since installining Linksys my PC won't sleep

All

I plan on installing a second NIC into my Vista MCE and then setting that NIC for wake on link. The DMA2100 will be hardwired via cross over cable to this NIC.

Magic Packets or Wake from Directed Packet (ARP) from the XBOX360 and RDP sessions etc respectively will wake the machine via the main NIC.

I also have a persistent ARP entry installed into my Netcomm NB9W so that the WOL and Wake on ARP wakes the machine from the internet side.

Cheers
