Extender or PS3 or what? need advise

Hey folks, first post here, looks like a good board to follow
I built a big rig earlier this year which I've already replaced and put the existing components into a nice HTPC Case where it resides in my Home Theatre room. I have this plugged into the TV and audio of course and plays just great as expected (although darn mouse range is only 6 feet which is annoying so MX Air is on it's way). This being in the new house now, all rooms are wired with cat5e and I have 2 other bedrooms I use to access the media centre/server to stream movies. What I don't have is the nice eye candy of the VMC visuals and colours, I simply access the file directories and initiate streaming of the file that way which is boring. So I take it I need to be looking at extenders...dma2100/dma2200, I have a ps3 (which I understand is not an extender) and don't really want another gaming system like the Xbox360 as the PS3 is collecting dust as it is really. If I was to buy a dma2100 or dma2200, where does this actually sit? I don't need the eye candy in the actual HT room I want it in the other 2 rooms, not to mention that I do not record or watch TV via the VMC I only stream encoded .mkv HD material and Music library. Could I just throw the extender if it was one of the DMA models to sit directly in the basement off one of my switch ports? I'm a little confused how they work and how versatile they are. Help and direction here would be greatly appreciated. I may have jumped the gun as well as I'm just starting to read up on how this can and can't work. The Popcorn Hour? Anyone know about that device?
