Blu Ray through My Movies on Extender?

I'm not sure whether this is a far fetched idea or not, but I've noticed on VMC when a DVD is in the drive, My Movies will display that DVD in it's interface allowing you to select and watch it.

So, my idea is- if you have an extender, say a Linksys DMA2100 with no DVD drive and you have setup My Movies to work with the extender, and if you have a DVD in the drive of the VMC host machine, will that DVD show up in My Movies on the extender, thus allowing you to watch it?

If so, then theoretically when Blu Ray is supported by VMC, you could watch a Blu Ray disc from your VMC on the extender in HD glory. The DMA2200 has a DVD drive of course, but is only an upscaling SD one.

Apologies if this has been asked before or is a silly queston.

Danimal.

Re: Blu Ray through My Movies on Extender?

hey there

would be good but.....I have tried it with an xbox 360 playing a dvd via mymovies from my MCE2005 machine - no go

I presume it will be the same for other extenders but someone with a dma2100/220 might test it for you

Re: Blu Ray through My Movies on Extender?

Funny you ask this, I just tried this 2 mins ago on my Dlink Extender, no luck sorry. Doesn't even show.

there is plenty of other threads on here though with advice on ripping DVDs and trying to share them through the extender. i assume blu-ray may be similar, but possibly more demanding on network resources.

There may also be an issue with HDCP compliance with the blu-ray stuff....not sure if anydvd would be any help in using it via an extender

Re: Blu Ray through My Movies on Extender?

If you can get the movie into .dvr-ms format then it should work. I've done this with DVDs with great success. The extenders treat the movies like recorded TV so you can skip and fast forward (and backward) with ease.

I've been looking into doing this myself with Blu Ray but the amount of disk space required to store the movie, as well as the time taken to rip and convert the content, means a lot of effort per movie.

Justin.
