DVD library reg hack for extenders???

Just wondering if extenders will be able to be reg hacked for the dvd library feature as in HTPC setups? Has anyone looked into it. I am assuming the extenders run on a cut down version of windows and therefore it may be possible to enable this feature.
Also can the media extender stream video from a Network Storage Device with UPnP without another pc having to be switched on? I have been looking at the netgear NAS nv+ and have been thinking that with several media centre extenders and one of these with a pc in the office, could be the way to go.

I recall that (in some post) it was stated that DVD library doesn't work for extenders.

I believe that is correct since I don't think extenders can play DVD images. The alternative method is to install MyMovies and convert all of your DVD images to use a single DVR-MS file for video.

Re: DVD library reg hack for extenders???

Here are some instructions for using Transcode 360 coupled with MyMovies to stream DVDs to your Xbox 360. http://www.indyfixmycomputer.com/fil..._Vista_MCE.pdf

This method works quite well, but you will be limited to the dated MyMovies inteface. However when MM v3 hits the streets, the menu's will apparently look as nice as the MC "DVD Library".

If you prefer the MC "DVD Library" interface on the X360, check this out. I am still playing around with this alternative, looks promising, but it doesn't appear to be the silver bullet. http://www.htpcug.org/Default.aspx?tabid=168

It might also be worth keeping an eye of OML

Thanks but I know about mymovies and personally think that software is crap. I would prefer to simply alter windows registry files and not use secondary softwares to do the job. Had a go at mymovies and i don't like the whole deal with how it acts as a media server and client software needs to be installed across the computers connected to it.

Thank PRJ32 for your response. I looked through those sites and it looks like a very complicated process. i didn't realise what was actually involved. My thinking was the extender would be running a cut down version of windows with media centre and i would only need to access the registry remotely somehow to get it happening. This clearly isn't the case. You have saved me the trouble of looking further into it. I will have to take a different path.

Why does Microsoft have to make things difficult when clearly this is what everyone wants.
