Lightbulb SONOS and ceiling speakers

Hi everybody,

I have just come to the realization that it may not be the Sonos transmitter that is responsible for the delay that I had when I tried to use the ceiling speakers for a surround sound effect.

In fact it seems that it is the MCE computer itself that runs behind the digital signal that was feeding my set top box. I presume that the computer buffers the signal prior to output.

I noticed this today as I was testing the range of my wireless earphones that are hooked up with the bedroom TV. The sound was running slightly ahead of the MCE computer in my office.

I haven't actually tested it, but I believe that I really could run the TV audio through the ceiling speakers if I were to input the set top box audio into the SONOS system, or alternately, if I were more like other people, I ran the TV off of Media Centre.

Cheers,

King Hilary.

Re: SONOS and ceiling speakers

What set top box are you using, does it have 5.1 rca out, if not, how can you differentiate from front channels to rear channels using the local in on the sonos?

How do you find the wireless range on the sonos controller?

You could use a speaker selector for the rear speakers to change from sonos to rear effect amplifier from set top box.

Good question that I had not thought much about. I have a large house with the amplifiers in the middle. I just tried. There is nowhere inside the house that I cannot control the system with the wireless controller. I know that I can controll the system from outside the house at the end of the patio, but not much farther away.

It is pouring rain outside at present, but perhaps I will measure the distance tomorrow.

As for the set top box. I am not actually doing this. The speakers will play whatever analogue source you feed into any one of the boxes. So of course if you want true differentiated surround sound you would have to input the proper source.

Cheers,

KH
