XBOX as Media Center Extender

I know my XBOX can be used as an extender.. any one know if you can get the software for it here yet? Google search didn't yeild much .. ( I just bought an XBOX for that very reason ... orig tried a DLink DSM-320 Media centre, but that wouldn't play back the shows my MC had recorded .. and neither does the current 3rd party version ( http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/ ) of Media Center for the ( modded ) XBOX ( a friend tells me) .. All I want to do is watch MC recorded shows on my TV .. how hard can it be??

P.S. Great site .. am sure it will go well for you .

Re: XBOX as Media Center Extender

G'day preperat and welcome

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to sidestep your question because even though I own one (it gets a big work out with the kids), I haven't brushed up on using Xbox as an MC device.

I have no doubts that someone here will be a lot more up to date than me.

Thanks for dropping by.

Mike

Re: XBOX as Media Center Extender

Hi preperat,

Sorry mate but I am going to be the bearer of some rather frustrating news for you, Xbox extenders are not even on the horizon for Australia yet, once again it comes down to the fact that we're a PAL territory and the current Xbox extenders available in the US are for NTSC territories only. This means that even if you go online and buy one from the US, it won't work in your current Xbox.
Timeline? There isn't one at the moment but at an absolute minimum 12 months. There is light at the end of the tunnel (they will eventually get here) but in the whole scheme of things Australia is a very small territory and unfortunately always one of the last thought of for these sorts of things.
If we could, we'd love to have them now, because at US$90, they're a hell of alot cheaper than the stand alone extenders (around US$300 each) and would give MS another benefit for XBOX over PS2 in the console war.

Re: XBOX as Media Center Extender

So is that to say .. "IF" I had a modded XBOX to handle NTSC, and a TV that could accept NTSC .. I could get a US version of Media Center Extender for Xbox and I'm all set ?

Re: XBOX as Media Center Extender

Actually, When thinking somemore,

If its a modded xbox then it you will be able to run the US version as modded boxes let you run NTSC programs

Re: XBOX as Media Center Extender

I just tried a version of the 3rd Party version XBMC that was released a few days ago, still no good on playing MC recorded files.

Its funny that you can copy the recorded file to a normal PC and it plays it just in WMP.

Re: XBOX as Media Center Extender

We might have to try and get Harry to join in here - he's done a softmod to his xbox and now it's working as an MCE (without any TV of course) and I believe it can also double as an extender as well.*

He's keeping his head down on the subject since he did it all himself and he's unsure of how "naughty" what he's done is* :P

So maybe if a few people start chanting, he might come out of hiding ;D
