I hard wired it - then it did allow me to update the firmware.
I then connected it to the PC via the hard wired route, it found it and all set up no probs - it lasted about 30 secs, then froze - a reboot on extender and could no longer find PC again!
To be honest, I'm kind of glad as I can just send it back for refund now. I can't get away with the abysmally slow startup time. The first thing I did was turn off the menu animations, but the interface is still slow and clunky - not a patch on a PC.
So, I have cleaned up and set up my old Vista laptop to the TV and using that instead - a MILLION times better IMO. No, I cannot schedule recordings - but that never interested me anyway. I just wanted access to my recorded TV. I can watch recorded TV via my HTPC no problem, I can listen to music and I can see my pics...plus the major benefit of this route is that I can watch My Movies through it without having to downgrade my collection, (they are direct DVD rips at the mo with no compression).
So, very hapy indeed now, and off to see if I can spec up a small HTPC for use as an extender instead.
Glad some of you guys have no problems with yours, but I just couldn't get away with mine.
I'm having the same problems with my dma2200, would not connect to the VMC pc over the network at work, kept freezing at the config stage. It is an issue with the DMA2200 not working with particular hardware as i bought it home and it worked perfectly over my home network. Thing is i took my xbox360 to work and it worked perfectly on the work network, did not skip a beat.
The support line is hopeless, its in argentina, on the linksys support forum there is a post on a similar issue to mine i tried to tell them about the post on there forum, they didn't want to know about it and said there technical guys always check the forums i said that is a load of crap cause the post is about two months old and you guys no nothing about the issue. Seems to be an issue with the machine not playing well with different routers/switches as it works with my setup at home.
they have offered me a replacement but i'm pushing for a refund which at present they are refusing.
Well sorry to say it, but mine has been great. Yes the menus are a bit jolty but that is my only bad point. It works an absolute treat over my Wireless N Network playing HDTV etc too.
I think I have to agree with the general consensus on these things that they do work quite well but with some caveats. Frankly I wouldn't go near wireless networking with a 40' barge pole. I have tried it with so many different products and laptops etc and all have been less than wonderful. Unless you're prepared to spend sizeable amounts of money on industrial strength network hardware you'll almost certainly be disappointed and even if you do there's never any great guarantee it won't give you hassles. Hard wired is the only way to go. The other issues, minor in my view considering the cost, are the slow startup time which I avoid by never switching it off and the restrictions on video playback codecs but in terms of the cost of alternatives you really can't go too far past the DMA2x00 range.
Worked great for me, only selling as I don't NEED it anymore. Moving back in with parents.
Good luck with the sale - but it seems a little expensive to me?
I paid $295 for mine from betterit.com.au and it was delivered in in 2 days.
My refund is about to come through and I'll be putting it toward a 360 or another full Media Centre, the Linksys was just too clunky and slow.
I'm using my old Vista laptop as a wireless extender at the moment - it's by far superior to the Linksys. There's no way I'll be trying another Linkysys anytime soon. I'm going to stick with using the laptop.
Having defended the DMA2200 in this and other threads previously, the longer I have it the less I like it. It really does need another firmware update to sort out its problems. The most annoying ones for me:
- Having to stop and resume long recorded TV programmes when they pixelate.
- AVI files stopping part way through playback.
- Disconnecting (although usually not when playing).
- Reporting files as corrupt that play fine on the PC.
- Lack of codecs for several popular file types.

To be fair, while mine doesn't suffer from all of those symptoms I'd have to say I wouldn't particularly recommend it as a great example of technology. The simple fact that it ever pixellates even with a gigabyte ethernet link tells me that it needs serious work. I have to wonder if there are better solutions out there but in the end, I guess it was a fairly cheap unit and for the most part it does the job.
has anyone tried running anything via the UAB port on one of these? i cant find out how to...
also having very annoying problems getting it connected to the PC, worked ok third time, then a couple of hours later didnt work, at all
