Update Guide question

A couple of questions about MCE and the guide:

1. Why does MCE need to have an internet connection when updating the guide, if I have used some other method to build the listing file?

2. Where does MCE hold the listing information?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Cojones

Re: Update Guide question

Without being able to prove this I have to wonder if this is actually so. I haven't tested it (and I don't have access to my MCE machine at present) but if you tried creating a phantom network using a loopback adapter and loading your listing file via BRP I would have thought it might work. That of course assumes that MCE does not make any calls to Microsoft or a known internet location in which case it would certainly fail. Personally I would give it a try if I were in that position.

Re: Update Guide question

might try monitoring the sites accessed at some time. I believe you could change the hosts file so mce looks at itself before improting the BRP data.

Re: Update Guide question

MCE does a check before downloading the guide data to make sure it is connected to the internet. This is primarily for dialup connectios esure the system has a connection to the internet before beginning the download process. If you were not connected to the internet an unessesary error would occur. You must remember that MCE was not design to down the guide from the local file system as in BRP. There is no way of disabling this preconnection check without serious modification of the original bytecode.

It is coded into the application, there is no registry setting to turn this option off or on. MCE was designed to get EPG data from and external source, and as such has been specifically coded to ensure it can connect to the internet before downloading the guide data.

You could make a HOSTS entry to redirect 'www.microsoft.com' to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) and run a local web server, but this may have other detrimental effects so is not recommended unless you fully understand what doing this will do.

Re: Update Guide question

found this thread while trying to make BRP 3.5 update my EPG without an internet connection (I supply the xmltv.xml locally)

Unfortunately, u cannot redirect (www.)microsoft.com by the HOSTS method, as Windows ignores these hosts entries for the microsoft domains
http://weblog.infoworld.com/security...oft_hosts.html
just thought I should put this here, in case someone else sees the thread and tries to go downthe same road
