How to install and configure ffdshow

ffdshow is a DirectShow decoding filter. Please read this page for a full and long description.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ffdshow

You can get ffdshow from here: http://www.codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

Installation:
Start install process and click on usual numerous "Next" "Agree" and "OK" buttons.
In "Select Components" section I usually leave default selection with only VFW interface selected.
Then you will get "Select additional Tasks" window. Personally I select all video formats, except of MPEG1 and MPEG2. Your Media Centre MPEG decoder should do it.
Then I deselect all audio formats and select only what I need. Plus I select AC3 and DTS and set it to SPDIF. It will allow you to get surround sound from you downloaded TV shows
Leave everything else using default settings.
Configuration:
Start Video Decoder Configuration and go to Post Postprocessing , enable it and select mplayer and accurate deblocking.
You are done.

Any commentaries and additional info are extremely welcome.

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

If I enable Post processing I get audio sync problems - the video lags the audio by about a second.

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

From this post.

Quote:
Have you tried scaling your video in ffdshow using the lanczos resiser?

I have mine set to use Fast SPP deblocking but I also scale all video to the native res of my panel (1368x768) with lanczos. Lanczos is great as it has the effect of sharpening the image during the resize so you sort of get it for free.

For better results change your filter ordering to do the scale first before the deblock, that way the deblocker has a 1368x768 image to work with rather than a tiny 640x272 image for example.

This will increase CPU usage a bit though but can be worth it.

Another thing to look at with ffdshow is just using the scaler with no postprocessing. A lot of the divx video these days just needs scaling. If it's a clean source doing the postprocessing (like SPP deblocking), will make it look worse.

Cheers,

Arkay.

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

I've been doing a lot of testing lately & have found my best video settings to be as attached (purely for AVIs - I don't do MKVs, so someone else may need to cover that).

I choose xvid over libavcodec where I can.

I find that deblocking works better before scaling for some reason (deblocking doesn't seem to actually do anything if it's after scaling, but this may be a bug in the build I'm using).

I prefer Spline to Lanczos for the resizing - it just seems a bit sharper.

GlenR mentioned sync issues when post processing - I only get trouble in VMC x64 as it seems that the postprocessing isn't really supported in x64.

Haver you tried some of the different deblocking options & decreasing sliders? I find that on the max I get trouble, but fast or accurate deblocking seems to be fine.

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

Thanks Justin,
Mplayer with accurate deblocking actually works better for me.

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

Thanks for the settings.

The order of items on my ffdshow menu is different to yours. Must be a different version.

Where do you get yours from?

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

Here's a link to a post I wrote ages ago with a bit of a basic breakdown of ffdshow. Might be of some use still.

Cheers,

Arkay.

Re: How to install and configure ffdshow

Krypto, I am guessing the reason why his FFDSHOW items are ordered different to yours is that he's moved them up/down and you haven't.

Thats the way you get FFDSHOW to carry out certain filters/functions before another....which many feel does make a big difference.

If you highlight the item and move your cursor over the left side of the tick box you should see an up down arrow appear - click on the desired way and it will move one place in that direction.

I'm pretty sure this is the reason the orders are different for you......apologies if not.
