Firstly wanted to say that I think MCEBuddy deserves its own sub-forum here. If Crunchie has one, I don't see any reason why not. MCEBuddy seems an excellent program with huge potential.
But, to get to the point - my question is this: how do I reset a recording so that MCEBuddy will try converting it again, after a failure. I thought that simply deleting the failed converted file would do this but it seems not.
The failure was apparently due to a mencoder crash - there was an error dialog when I closed MCE regarding the crash, and MCEBuddy had quit converting the file at maybe 50% way through, and moved on to the next file in the list. I've since added another Gb of RAM and would like to try again, have deleted the partial converted file, restarted MCE and computer etc, all to no avail - MCEBuddy sits there idle.
I'd just try renaming it slightly, ie add a 1 to the title of the file and see if that works.
Thanks, but no good unfortunately. I tried this and also tried changing the watched folder in MCEBuddy to something else, starting and stopping the service, then changing it back. It still just goes straight back to idle. I could reinstall the software, but I'm guessing there is a simple trick of some kind.
Well normally I pick up files with bad streams by using Videoredo to edit ad's and fix broken streams. As a result of that I haven't had that issue. MCE buddy has it's own forum which is probably why we don't have a special sub-forum.

No idea about videoredo - will check it out. I did check MCEBuddy's forum before posting here, but as it did not seem very busy, and the author is clearly active here (and even has links here from the MCEBuddy forum), it makes sense to me to post here where more people might know a solution and post (and more other people might benefit from the answer) To me that's what a thriving community is all about. I will post the question there too and see what responses happen.
Actually I first got the impression that when looking for a shrinking addon, Crunchie would be the way to go - since it was most popular (based on it having a dedicated subforum here and more posts - in fact it could just be that its older and people know about MCEBuddy etc). I tried it and it was a complete flop and not very friendly for figuring out why it didn't work. I then thought I would try MCEBuddy and it was much simpler, and worked 'straight out of the box'.
... Edit: I see videoredo is commercial software ($50 to $75) - unfortunately I'm not so loaded with cash I can afford to buy commercial software just to compress files for more efficient storage until I get around to watching them. MCEBuddy seems to do exactly what I need - if I can just get past this issue (if ad removal works, well thats a bonus, but hitting the skip button a few times is really no big chore to me).

Hi Scapes,
The only reason Crunchie has it's own subforum is because the developer (me) is a mod on this site so it made sense to support the app globally from here.
I'm sure you'll get the help you need through the regular forums though. If not you can track down the dev at his favorite haunt
Cheers,
Arkay.

I'll tag on the end of this thread since the subject is still relevant, and because though I did the earlier question to the mcebuddy forum as well as here, both got no response from the author (not that I'm complaining at all - I still think he/she has provided an excellent free software that is extremely valuable).
New question - does anyone have any experience with MCEBuddy not taking out commercials at all, even though the option to do so is selected?
When I had this problem, what I did was to start a new folder within my normal target folder for MCE Buddy.
I then configured Buddy to start conversions in the new target folder and put the file I wanted converted into the folder. This worked perfectly. But yes I know what you mean, if the conversion fails for some reason, it is not obvious how to restart it.
I hope this helps.

Thanks - I haven't had any more trouble with restarting conversions by simply deleting the converted file (with MCEBuddy stopped) - in fact its only been needed at all when I've forgotten to check it anything is currently converting before shutting the system down for a reboot or a little downtime as I like to do periodically.
The issue of no commercials being removed is a whole 'nother question though - no idea how to proceed on that. I'm wondering if I need to have some licensed commercial software (ShowAnalyzer?) installed for it to work. MCEBuddy forums give me the impression that Comskip is a free alternative, which is supposedly installed with the main software by defeault, but I'm really unsure. Obviously I'm not doing somethign right as others clearly had no problems with commercial removal.
I have no experience with the commercial removal part of MCE buddy. I use Video redo to remove commercials. I will try your suggestion of deleting a program with MCE Buddy stopped. And yes, the most common scenario for me is that MCE buddy is quietly converting a file, and the wife comes along with a why is this thing on? and shuts the system down.
I can see your point too, sorry about the break from the thread but I took a much needed holiday.
Comskip is a possible option for you to remove ad's with but one of my main reasons for sticking with Video redo is I like to be sure of the result; and as I said earlier it will fix broken DVR-MS files as well. You get a lot of bang for those $70 or so dollars.
If I recall correctly I was using ts-convertor to fix files before I got Video redo so maybe try that.
