I am thinking of build a web app where the user can control Media Center from anything that can run a web browser. The reason why I am building this is because I want to be able to use my PSP to control the MCE from anywhere around the house so I can see what is happening on the Media Center by looking at the web page.
However, I am struggling and need some help. Of course the finished product will be free for all unrestricted, although I will probably have a PayPal donate option.
Regardless all I need to start off with are 2 things:
1. A sample of code that it you click on a button/link on a pae it runs a command on Media Center
2. A sample of code that displays some information on the Media Center (ie. something like what channel you are watching or what music you are playing.
Yeah I should probably be a bit more descriptive.....
Firstly my aim is not to cut webguide's grass.... They have built an awesome application and while I don't use it, it looks absolutely fantastic. The no.1 difference between webguide and my solution is that I want to control all the MCE menu remotely via the WEB. From what I understand webguide provides information remotely, and allows users to control the guide, but it doesn't allow the user to simply control the other items such as music and photos, etc. EG. In webguide, I belive the user can access their music, but it is output on the PC/Device accessing the Media Center as opposed to the Media Center itself, so if you wanted webguide to change the TV channel, or the a song being played on the Media Center, it couldn't do this.
So if anyone can help with this info, it would be greatly appreciated....
Actually, since early January, WebGuide does allow you to turn it into a "remote control". Still working on the features, but basically, you can choose a TV show and click the button that says "Play on TV", and it will play it on the MCE machine itself rather than streaming it through the browser. The same goes for pictures, music and videos. I've also built a basic web-based remote control, so you have access to all of the main control buttons (transport controls, arrows, etc).
Here's a screenshot of the remote control running on a Pocket PC.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I thought I'd chime in...
Thanks.
Doug

Actually you can VNC via a PSP.... I have tried it and got it working.
My only issue with VNC is that you can't hard select items on the scree as it is an image dump. I want to DPAD on the PSP to work exactly the same as it would with the DPAD on the MCE remote, ie. you are selecting menu items with it at the press of a button as opposed to controlling a mouse.
Other than that the difference between VNC and this app is negligible, but for me it will be worth it if I can get this functionality to happen.

Now there's something I didn't see with webguide but then I recently rebuilt my MCE and I haven't got around to reinstalling webguide yet.
I have webguide working and streaming live and recorded tv. Trick was to install powerdvd and use its video filter. Seems to work well, but have some troubles from work, damn proxy...
I've had all of the streaming functionality working perfectly both internally and externally but the problem I had was that my upload bandwidth was not sufficient to support anything more than very jerky low quality video over the internet. If I installed it again it would not be for the purpose of streaming video unless I was to find a cheap way to get greater upload speed. Personally I used ports 1080 and 1081 for webguide and had no problem at all with work firewalls etc.
