riplock and dvd drives

hey... lookin to by me some more dvd drives, and wanted to make sure they are fast... and i've heard a few brands implement a speed limiting object on their drives which slows down when ripping from dvds (pioneer apparently is one of them).... anyone confirm? i know my pioneer seems slow... and don't want somethin with it so lookin for somethin that DON"T have this

Re: riplock and dvd drives

I thought that although this can be limited by hardware, could be overridden by software??

Might be wrong. Anyways, I have a Pioneer 116 IDE I beleive and it seems to rip quickly. As far as burners I have had, this one is flawless and has been for last 12mths. I would rather it do it a bit slower and work everytime than push just for speed.

Speed will still vary when reading the disc based on the part of the disc it is reading, which is part of the technology of all optical drives to my understanding to allow reliable reading.

Slower reading speeds can often mean less errors in the rip, especially with older or slightly scratchy discs.

Perhaps I still remember ripping from my old drives taking hours sometimes, so by today's standards I am happy with the speed.

As another alternative, might want to checkout the LiteOn drives. They used to be able to flash the roms with modded firmware. Not sure if this is still the case, but also found the LiteOns to be very quick .. umm and noisy :P

Well call it a riplock or call it noise abatement when you want to watch a DVD, but most Pioneer drives are limited to 5x with original DVD's, there are ways around it.

Yeah was aware of slowing speed for reading DVDs, but older units I used to do this with Nero Drivespeed. This does help for playback where noise is a factor. Never heard of it as mentioned above, being slowed for ripping though.

Nero Drivespeed doesn't work for all drives. Effectively the Pioneer drive will see a DVD-Video (with CSS) booktype and slow to 5x, which means its quiet, but also means you can't rip at faster than 5x, and if you use a patch to unlock it, it will be noisy.
