Thumbs up Corsair HX520W PSU - Nice

I put one of these in my main VMC the other day in a power supply shuffle (my Coolermaster went back in to a Centurion 5 tower) & I have to say, it's very nice.

The modular cables are great & the spacing of the connectors allowed me to run 1 SATA cable to my (now) 2 hard drives & 1 molex cable to my DVD drive & through to my case fan connectors (in 2 different chambers).

Added to that, the P4 power lead (the extra motherboard 4 pin power lead) is a bit longer than the usual, so I was able to route it around the CPU easily (my PSU is mounted upside down, so the cables come out on the far side).

I'll see if I can post some of my own photos later on.

Justin

And the best thing is they are whisper quiet. Would be nice to see some photos of your completed rig.

Re: Corsair HX520W PSU - Nice

I have been using 2 of these for nearly a year. One is in my WHS powering 9 HDDS.

Silent...and reliable so far.

Yep, they're the best power supplies out there IMHO. I've got 2 of the 620HX models in my server and main rig, so quiet, stable and handle anything you throw at them, including 15 hard drives in the server.

And there's even a 1000W model for those SLI freaks out there!!

Cheers

Re: Corsair HX520W PSU - Nice

Good to hear.

I'll be grabbing one of these for my first HTPC build.

Re: Corsair HX520W PSU - Nice

A pity they don't come in lower wattage versions, I'm sure my HTPC would run fine on a 380w or 430w.

I have just moved my HTPC over to a Silverstone GD02 case and it's designed for the 120mm fan type PSUs (you can flip the PSU to suck cool air from the underside of the case). I currently have an Antec NeoHE 430w and it doesn't work as well in this case, it only has the front vents and a rear 80mm fan. I'm trying to find something else that is quiet and modular, the Neo's fan is working too hard with the reduced airflow so gets a little noisy.

The Enermax PRO82+ 525W is better in efficiency and quietness. (check reivew, im not saying that the corsair one is bad, its just the PRO82 is better )

I was running a standard Coolermaster RS-430-PCAR (now been replaced by the 460 I think) & it was fine - cheap too ($60). I only changed because of the modular cables.

Here are my photos.

Re: Corsair HX520W PSU - Nice

Looks good. Have you thought about putting a Mini-Ninja in there and passive cooling?

I don't notice the fan noise (all the fans are barely turning over), but I like the Thermaltake cooler as it has a large gap between the part that sits on the CPU & the actual heatsink (joined by 4 heat pipes) which allows a direct line between the case fans & the onboard GPU/northbridge.

My one criticism of the Fusion/NSK2480 is that most motherboard heatsinks are oriented 90 degrees to the air-flow of the case (as the board layouts expect front to back cooling) meaning that they often don't have much air-flow passing through them.

I had one of those in another PC for a while. Maybe I just got a bad one but it was way too noisy to consider for my HTPC. I RMA-ed it and got a new one but sold it unopened so will never know LOL.

Can anyone claify if the Corsair VX versions are physically smaller (not as deep)? Yes I know they are the non-modular variety.
