Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

Has anyone heard of this issue?

I have a number of Antec Fusion Black cases that, whenever I plug a USB device (HDD or RF dongle etc) into the front USB ports, the system powers off.
Not gradually either, more like a power cut than anything.

It looks like a shorting issue to me. But I cannot put my finger on it.
The case appears to have a cable connected to the chassis inside and this cable appears to come from the front pannel.

It could be the mainboard, but Im not in a position at this point to try alternative MBs.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

Sounds like an incorrectly fitted cable, some do not have a blanking plug and can be connected in reverse onto the wrong pins....

I`ve also got a laptop where the usb port is slightly offset meaning that you can actually plug something in upside down, as it were and this will completely shut down the laptop immediately....might be worth a check

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

All great suggestions!

I have:
Checked my internal USB cable. All seems to be good. Ive tried changing the internal port too.

Ive unplugged all additional peripherals and still shut down.

Im wondering a fault in this case... try contacting Antec... impossible!

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

Heres a freaky one for ya peeps!

It was the Hauppauge T-500 tuner. Don't know why but when installed. FP-USB shuts down system upon plugging in a device.

When out of the case, runs like a dream!

Work that one out! Something to do with the tuners power management maybe. OR maybe it's not shutting the system down but just shutting the GFX card off. I have no picture but the system still seems to lock.

Who knows!!
----------------------------------------------------
Back to square one. After 3 more reboots to be sure, it did it again.
Have removed additional Firewire card in PCI slot now. Looks like mainboard. Which looks to be a constant in all cases...

Abit!!! But youve never let me down!!!

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

It wouldn't surprise me - the Nova T 500s can have issues when there are 2 of them in the same system & one theory is that it's a USB mix up of some sort (the cards are actually a PCI card with a USB bridge & then 2 USB tuners on top of that).

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

Thats very good feedback.

Although, to sooth my curious mind, I placed another boxed unit on my bench and booted up. This one has a Dvico tuner in it and BAM! There it is. So I have two constants, one is the case. The other is the mainboard.

My thought pattern is, if it IS the case, what (in regards to shorting) could it be? The case IS earthed but my knowledge of electronics is far too little to test it via a multimeter or something.

OR, its the mainboard and when I plug the USB device in, it's maybe having an issue dealing with the power changes / requirements.

I will have to aquire an alternate mainboard. Unhappy customers there will be... (yoda moment)

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

I have an Antec case, and have had major issues with the power supply. If your power supply is only 460 watt or so, try another one and see if that helpsl
Cheers.

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

My money would be on the mobo - any BIOS updates for it?

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

BIOS updates? Ill check it out...
I didn't look there though, because the shut off seemed way to quick. I just assumed it had to be a short!

Will msg back soon.

Re: Antec Fusion shuts down when plugging USB device into front ports.

Sounds like your power supply is oversensitive, either current draw or some kind of short circuiting problem.
Similarly, I have a card reader on the front of my main rig which tends to trip out my power supply if I connect my external hdd to it when having powered the ex hdd first.
If I connect the usb cable first then plug in its power supply lead it works fine , but the otherway round and instantly reboots the pc.
