24 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations

Hi All

I am needing to upgrade my DLink 16 Port Gigabit Switch as I have run out of ports. As I have always been a Dlink switch type of guy, I was looking for recommendations for other brands that maybe better then my DLink DGS-1016D

Cheers
Andrew

Depends on your budget, I found Linksys are very good, they are actually scaled down Sisco routers, but more expensive.

Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations

I've started using Netgear JGS524 24 port Gigabit switches for my customers (mainly small offices) - at $400 they're performance has been very pleasing.

Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations

I've got both a Netgear GS724T and a Linksys SRW2024. They are both good switches, but I prefer the Linksys as the management interface is better than the Netgears.

If you arn't doing any vlans etc then either would be fine.

Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations

I got myself one of these:

They are great switches. Lots of flexibility...
Note: They are as loud as a 747 though!

So it wouldnt be suitable for a quite environment....

Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations

I see that you have already bought / settled on something .. however for anyone else in the future hopefully the information is useful as well.

When looking into a switch, have a look at what their overall switching capacity is between ports. Most of the cheaper end switches will have a very low rate, thus when you start to load up the switch your over all port speeds diminish.

Most of the above switches have decent switching capacity, however as indicated noise could be a problem with some of them.

Another brand taking a look at is the HP ProCurve 1800 Series (http://www.hp.com/rnd/products/switc...s/overview.htm)

Their 24 Port unit has a zero dB acoustic value as it has no fans - and supports quite a good variety of features.

Also - it has a lifetime warranty - I know some people say switches rarely die, but I have personal experience of switches / ports just die in production / server rooms so to have this as standard as part of the purchase is a pretty good insurance policy for peace of mind.

Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations

Cisco is the way to go. You could pick up a cheap 2924 or something these days.

Most other switches do not have the backplane speed to have all ports running full speed or even close to half what is required.
