Is Raid 0 worth it?

Hi all,

Noob to VMC (but loving it!)

I was thinking of upgrading the Hard Drive to a single 750, but as I have 2 320's I was wondering if was worthwhile setting up the motherboards Raid function to stripe these into 1 drive?

only tv shows will be stored on this drive.

I am planning on going from 2 to 4 tuners and thought the speed increase maybe worthwhile?

Would I have any issues with writing to the non striped hard drive if I was ever in the situation of recording 4 shows at once?

Thanks

(bored on the night shift!)

Re: Is Raid 0 worth it?

A single drive is ample for 4 tuners. I have tested my 1tb ecogreen (5400rpm) with 3 tuners and simultaneous file transfer with out issue.

Reading these forums it seems that people have regular issues with raid. Raid 0 on the motherboard controller is probably your best recipe for problems.

While you may initially think you don't care about the data, it becomes a different matter when it disappears

Couldn't agree more with your last sentence.

But... My backup machine is Thecus n5200, 5x1TB WD green power drives set up as RAID 5 (4 active drives and 1 hot spare) and no problems to speak of.
