Edit: Sorry to hijack my own thread but.... Supposing I just stick with a SATA DVD Recorder. Does anyone have any favourites? My current IDE DVD Player is really noisy, hence the upgrade.
yes i've got one, they are reasonable, and they seem quite popular.
One issue i and others have experienced, is in some mobos, the drive does not wake correctly from S3 sleep from some SATA controllers, eg ATI SB600, and disappears from device manager, a system restart is required to recover.

It's a pretty good drive, i bought mine just for the software.
Blu-ray is the winner and if the drive ever packs up aleast i can use the software with another drive.
SATA is better then PATA, anyway.
I have this drive it is OK, I think that LG is a bit quieter but I use AnyDVD to make it quiet.
I don't use sleep, so no sleep issues here

OK, after XPmedia.com.au members responses and my own investigation I purchased the Pioneer BDC_S02BK.
It was easy to install. SATA cable and power.
My problem now is I'm getting mixed results in Media Centre. Some DVDs work and some don't. I checked and it's NOT a region issue. My copy of 8 Wonders of the Industrial Age worked (region 4) but a copy of the Firefly series does not (region 4 also).
I purposely haven't installed the Cyber Link Software. I want my media Centre to run as lean as possible which will hopefully keep it reliable. (well that's the idea).
My old "crappy" LiteOn DVD burner worked fine, it was just very noisy. The Pioneer is VERY QUIET!!!. Big plus in my books!
I'm wondering if it would pay to reset Media Centre and perform the initial set-up again. Does anyone know how this is done?
Mine is OK, plays everything, DB's or DVD's region 4 and region 1.
But I have MCE 2005 and Cyberlink decoder. Plus anyDVD on the top.
I would try to install PowerDVD and see if it can play.

I have had my BDC-S02BK for just over 3 months. At first it was a little bit fussy in not reading some discs but now it seems to be unable to read ANY disc. It has only had very light use. I have contacted Pioneer today and I am waiting for them to respond. Pretty disappointed with this drive. Cannot recommend it.
Presumably you are using the PlayMovie plugin for BluRay disks. Make sure you have the latest version by running the online update. If it says you have the latest version then there's probably not much you can do but if it just sits there and hangs it probably means you have the early version and will need to get an update from Pioneer since it doesn't seem to be able to update online. In truth I haven't had any issues with playing disks since I upgraded to the latest version but then my collection is still very small.
I am not just talking about movie DVD's and Blu-Ray discs. It won't read any type of data disc, i.e. game cd's, Vista installation DVD etc. I have now upgraded the firmware to version 1.07 and now it is reading audio CD's and some blank media but I need it to read all discs whether they are software or movies, so as it stands it is still completely unsatisfactory.

If that is the case then there is definitely either something wrong with the drive or something wrong with your configuration as mine works perfectly. I would try deleting the device from device manager and then force Windows to reinstall it. If you still get problems then the problem is most likely to be something wrong with the motherboard or its drivers, the drive itself or something screwy with your Windows install. In any case, plenty of people have reported trouble-free operation with this particular model.
I sent the drive back and Pioneer replaced it with a brand new one (full retail boxed version) It took about 3 weeks in all. Installed it today and it seems to be working okay so far. Pretty happy that Pioneer decided to replace rather than try to repair it.
