Anyone know of the best fanless/Silent PCI-E graphics card that will fit(not much room in box) in a shuttle SB83G5M? Currently running of onboard graphics, which sucks. Have tried fan cards, but too loud.
I have removed the ATI card as it was too loud. I'm currently using the MB integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 Video Card. My main use for this machine is as a HTPC, so low noise is a priority, but I need a card that can output HD. I will be connecting it to a 42" plasm via DVI, so outputs apart from DVI are unimportant. If there is a fanless card that can also play some games, that would be a bonus, but as I said HTPC is the main use.
I saw a Gigabyte GeForce 6200TC 256/128 PCIE card recently. Fanless, small heatsink, with DVI/VGA/Component/SVHS Outputs for under $100. The TC is no big deal as it has 128MB DDR onboard, and can use an extra 128MB from system if it needs to, but probably won't. Not great for gaming, but not useless for it either.
i just picked up a MSI 7600GS, and echo the recommendations of the others who have similar cards. The first hint that this was going to be good for HTPC, apart from the passive heat sink, was the lack of power connector on the card.
Comparing the heat output from my zalman passively cooled 6600GT to the 7600GS is like night and day, the 7600GS is only warm to the touch after running benchmarks, whereas the 6600GT is a mini radiatior inside my main machine.
Only mini-gripe is that the drivers I downloaded from the nvidia site didn't work with it, I had to use the inbox drivers. I'm sure I just need to grab a later beta driver from somewhere.

Hmmm...they don't work because its a 7600GS or because its MSI???
i've seen that MSI don't always use the NVIDIA Reference board, so the drivers don't work as well...try going to the MSI website and seeing if they have updated drivers there...
What version are the drivers that come on the CD???

84.19 is the inbox driver. I've hit my optus cap so have delayed any additional downloads until tomorrow. Just looking at the notes for the current drivers and the 7600GS isn't actually listed, even the beta up on nzone...
I'm not too fussed at the moment, all seems to work.
cheers

How big is the heatsink on the 7600GS? I don't have a huge amount of room between the PCI-E and PCI slots or the PCI-E slot and the side wall of my computer.

No worries, mate. You will be OK there. I run the 7600GS next to a DVICO TV card in an SD36G5M which is almost identical to yours from the architecture.
i spent two weeks deciding on which 6xxx range nividia card i was going to buy, then finally decided on a passively cooled 6600gt and then late last night i realised that the fanless 7600gs would be ideal. from what i've read in the last 24hours, the 7600gs is perfect for a fanless card, and runs on avg 5-15% better than a 6600gt! Asus also have a 512mb model thats showing up only $20-30 more expensive that the 256mb model.
hey guys im going to get the Nvidia 7600GS passive cooled card, ive noticed there is some "unknown" and also well known brands out there like asus, msi, leadtek etc .. is brand important? or @ the end of the day it doesnt really make a differene? cheers
