recommend me an external 3.5" HDD enclosure
this thread has 17 replies and has been viewed 1134 times
I need some portable hefty storage, so I am getting myself a 400GB 3.5" HDD and want to put it in an external enclosure. It has to have USB2, firewire is completely optional and will probably never be used anyway. It would be nice if it could be host powered though every one of these I have seen in 3.5" size require external power supplies, so I don;t know if such a beast exists.
Other than that, it would be good to know if there are any of these which support spinning down the drive when it is not in use, or any other recommendations anyone can make.
***(Designed with a smaller hard drive inside (2.5-inch) to offer up to 100GB of portable storage in a sleek and very small footprint for your desk, the Seagate Portable External Hard Drive is the smallest desktop external hard drive offered by any of the leading hard disc drive suppliers. This high-capacity, USB bus-powered portable external drive offers low power consumption, high shock tolerance and a compact footprint - it's the ultimate solution for consumers and business travelers who want to take their digital content with them.)***Copied from above website.
If you need speed - consider getting an external SATA II drive (recommed WD or Samsung - low heat - low noise) - the recent ASUS mobo's have an external SATA II connector on the backpanel. Sweet.
yep, that is the kind of thing, there are literally heaps of different manufacturers of these things, so I was hoping to hear if anyone has any personal recommendations.

mmm external sata II, sounds nice but for me speed isn't much of an issue, USB2 will suffice quite well as it is mainly for offsite backups of my ripped cd collection and my important files etc. and usb2 will let me plug it into most computers without any special requirements.
Not really, I have one on my desk at the moment, and it has been on since 7.00am this morning, and is warm to the touch, but certainly not hot.
The drive seems to use the case as a heatsink, so the case gets warmer than others I have had, but the drive seems to stay quite cool.
It's a BlueEye O2 USB2/firewire combo. Was about $80 when I bought it (12 months back). They've got ones with card readers & USB2/SATA combos now (seems like a good future-proofing route).
Performance wise, it seems great. USB is faster than firewire in my setup (came with both cables). Bit noisy (depending on the drive in it at the time). Pretty easy to swap out the drive.
I don't like your chances of getting a host powered one - not enough current supplied by USB to spin the motor.
I've also used Maxtor One Touch drives with clients &, gotta say, I've had trouble 2 out of 3.
