Its a nice addon - showing callerid in MCE2005 - but for several of us, it has been an expensive experience... Buying 3 or 4 modems until we find one that works.
Certainly the packaging and websites are misleading (found several references to dlink supporting callerid - which it does not!), and store vendors are less than knowledgeable and just want to sell you product - particularly the asian no name modem cards...
Yet to find a package specifically stating CID, soemtimes they mention TAM (Telephone Answering Machine - still not good enough for us), and occassionally TAPI (Thats what we want - getting closer, but will that TAPI device work in Aus with our Caller ID ???)
This thread is solely be used in telling others what modems work / dont - so please dont start talking about YAC / TAPI etc within here - use another thread.
Guys / Gals (?) try and keep the format similar - and hopefully this information can help others;
Post your experiences, card, model and what software it works with....

The problem is that the modem must support the Australian implementation of caller ID. It is referred to as calling line identification here, or CLI. To check if a modem that you have has CLI, then open up Hyperterminal, type AT+VCID=1 and then call the modem with another telephone. You If you don't see a telephone number appear before the second ring has started, then the modem does not support CLI.
After doing an exhaustive search, the cheapest modem I could find that supports CLI in Oz is the Netcomm Roadster V.92. I have a serial version, but the USB does work too.
Netcomm Roadstar V92 - Serial Interface,
Model Number AM5698,
Works successfully with Tapirex Beta 9 and YAC (Australian CID compatible)
+/- $159 AUD

assuming that the line being tested has CID enabled.

I haven't done this yet but it's on my list. When I do all the hard bits will have been sorted for me eh? Even a list of modems that will work...too easy.
I have made this thread a sticky for a while so it doesn't get buried.
If someone has the time oneday we should complile a list of found working modems, with just a link to it, where in the future the list is still nicely available to easy get to

Hi Brent,
That's the idea of this thread mate
And I think Impact will just edit his first post to update the list as people post here with what they have working.
My old steam-driven Banksia Wave-56 supports caller ID (I didn't know it did until I tried
it in Hyperterminal).
It is a serial-connected external. Unfortunately it is on a PC in my study on the other end
of the house from the media centre PC, but I suppose I could tried one of these YAC-things if someone has a recommendation.
I'll also have to look up the AT command to stop the modem from actually answering the phone unless someone remebers what it is.
