There are in the remote.... or are you talking about the receiver?
The receiver doesn't have any batteries, but the remote obviously does, and it can do funny things when the batteries are low.
It was meant to be a sarcastic response to you dgaust!!!!
Well it looks like you guys did not get it.
To get back to the topic, yes I have changed the batteries and no I dont mean the receiver. That still works fine using my M$ wireles keybaord.
I played with the remote last night and noticed another thing:
With Fresh batteries, If I move the remote close to the receiver (say about 50cm) it works fine, Yet when I move back to the sofa and still pointing at the black box, nothing.
So, it looks like the remote does indeed work but only at a very short distance.

Anyone have any other (smart) ideas?
I chose to ignore the sarcasm, as it was clearly an idiotic thing to do on your part. Of course, since you gave us so much information in your original post about what the issue was and the troubleshooting steps you had already undertaking, I went for the lowest common denominator.
When you chose to resort to sarcasm, I again chose the lowest common denominator approach. Looks like I was proven right to take that tact.

Remember not all AA cells are created equal. If you are using some of the 20 x AA's for $1.57 then you may want to try a decent name brand to ensure that you actually have the right voltage and current capacity from the cells enabling the remote to function correctly.
Also, is the transmitting end of the remote clean, ie no layer of gunge detracting from a decent IR transmission.
Lastly, any new lights, screens, projectors, etc in the room that may be grossly interfering with the IR signal?

Too many toys is still not enough.
I'll second the 'try different batteries' suggestion. I've been caught in the past finding that some electronic device still wouldn't work after inserting new batteries. After trying batteries of a different brand, everything worked smoothly again. And it hasn't always been a case of the brand name batteries working where the no-names won't. Anyway, worth a try.
put the batteries in backwards then press a bunch of buttons - as many as you can at the same time - for like 10 or 15 seconds. then put the batteries in right way around.
Have you installed a CFL in the room? (compact fluorecent lamp) (spelling). Turn it off and see what happens then.
The easiest way to test if it works, get a mobile phone with a camera or a digital camera and point the remote at it then look at the camera screen, whilst pressing a button on the remote, you should see flashing light coming out of the remote.
LCD screens such as my Bravia interfere with the MS IR receiver. I have had to turn my MS receiver so that it faces away from the screen due to interference problems.
