Get Logitech remote to work with HTPC

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a logitech universal remote (looking at hte 525 or 728) and use it with their HTPC? I'd LOVE to have my HTPC controlled by a universal remote as currently I have a MS remote but since we got foxtel I've had to then use the fox remote, AND switch TV inputs usin the TV remote. kinda annoying!!

Possible depending on the receiver I have (currently I have hte MS receiver that came with the remote).... do i need a new receiver or ... stuff... also getting a new case, maybe a case with a built-in perhaps if i can afford it?

Re: Get Logitech remote to work with HTPC

A lot of people here use a logitech remote with the MS receiver. Works perfectly.

Total - it completely replicates every function of the MCE remote (& then some).

They're pretty damn good. You set up devices (they're in an online database, so it's unlikely you'll need to have it learn from existing remotes) & can change buttons & orders, & then you also set up activities where you can do things like "Watch VMC" where it turns on your TV, changes to the right input, turns on the VMC & turns on your receiver & changes it to the correct input. You then choose the buttons from each device that you need for that activity - e.g. you'll probably want the volume to control the recevier, so you set the volume keys to work the receiver, but the channel up & down keys work the VMC, etc.

You tend to get it broadly 90% right straight off & then make little adjustments (like adjusting delays between commands & changing button orders, etc.).

A few more macro options & more awareness of the current state of the devices (i.e. knowing the TV is already on when starting a different activity) would make it perfect, but it's pretty good.

Edit: Here's a tip - have a notepad handy for when you start using the remote & take note of any things you think of to adjust when you're using it, otherwise you'll go to make changes & won't remember half of them.

Justin

most excellent... just picked one up in my morning break and playing with the software for about 10mins here at work.... i like it (lucky I have all my model/serial numbers recorded on my intranet... accessable using SSH.. WOO heh)... one thing i haven't figured out yet is renaming the activities (coz i have my media center on watch MY tv, and foxtel as watch tv....) ... i'll find it eventually hehe... too many functions for the media center tho, don't want to have a button to go to recorded tv, live tv, dvd, etc etc.... is there a way to get one to just bring up the media center on front screen? i can only find specific activities for it.... but as i said, only 10 mins, have much more time tonight to play more

Re: Get Logitech remote to work with HTPC

Pretty easy to rename an activity, just select the activity, settings and there will be an option to 'Rename xxxxx'

Pretty simple

Re: Get Logitech remote to work with HTPC

They are all programmed the same way, some just have fewer options available on screen than others, and different hard buttons.

But you can program them all the same.
