Re: mediacenter/gaming pc

Building these crossover rigs is among my favoruite passtimes(and second job) Here's some points to consider, IMO, of course >>>

*xp media center edition is a 32 bit OS> you arent really going to see much use out of all 4gb. If you want to be a RAM 'whore', Vista x64 is your only option >> still, there are simply not that many games that are x64 optimisied out there, yet Other apps, sure, gaming...not yet.

2x9800GX2 or tri-sli 9800GXT is a lot of grunt >> BUT, a heck of a lot of power being chewed up... you didnt mention a PSU in your build plan > which is one of the most vital considerations here... Youd be looking at a 1000W+ PSU, which will quite simply murder your electricity bill >> be warned.

Also, theres also not much point in using 2x DX10 ready cards in an xp based OS. Whether you like/understand DX10 aims or not.... the hardware being produced is designed to optimise it... Games like Crysis and Bioshock are only among a few that do though.. If youre laying out that type of cash, youd think future proofing is among one of your build aims

Why dont you wait for the next gen of GPUs coming out after the G92 series >> thats what I'd do... with the significant jump in transistor count they'll be packing, it simply defeats the purpose of something like the 9800GX2, esp from a power consumption POV. I myself am not upgrading until there is a single pcb solution that can do crysis maxxed at 1600p >> this is about 12-18 months away...

Other factors >>

*Despite being an AMD fanboy, intel quads are proven performers for high end. If you got the cash(and you seem to), an Intel QX(quad extreme) variant will give you the CPU kick you need.

*Display > You must surely have 1080p or 1600p display if youre wanting to pack that much punch. Anthing less than this is overkill with those specs

*What type of games do you actually want to play ? Crysis better be in this list, otherwise, again >>overkill with those specs !!

*What thermal countermeasures and case are you thinking about... Youre looking at a pretty hefty rig here, definitely not in keeping with minimal av sized aesthetic and a 'quiet as can be' approach

For what you are aiming at, I'd almost lean towards recommend you to build 2 separate rigs, or even get a pS3 !!

If youre building such a serious gaming rig, you must be somewhat serious about gaming, why have 2+ tuners rattling on recording desperate houswives/big bro etc for your missus whilst you are trying to destroy foes in crysis in glorious HD

From my experience, a crossover rig tends to be more appropriate and practical if the user a low-mod intensity TV recorder/gamer. For these purposes. something like an 8800/9800GT(x) in a case like the antec fusion(for example) is more than adequate.

anyway, my 2c

feel free to fire away any more questions

Re: mediacenter/gaming pc

wow thanks you read me like a book.

ok reason i want twin hd tuners is becuse i have 720p 40 inch lg tv that only has ditgital tuner not hd, and yes so i can record tv for gf why i game. i would prefer to be able to conect pc via hdmi if posible

i will be upgrading to 1080p with in the next 6 - 12 months so pc needs to be able to suport this,

as for games right now i play on xbox 360 which will be moved to the living room as an extender. i want to make the move from console gaming to pc gaming now that i have the cash to get a decent pc, so that i can take advantage of comunity made mods and the bigger range of games that i am interested in, eg spore rts and driving sims and 1st person shooters

i am a game junkie and i want this set upto be as futuer profed as much as a pc can be.

if vista is the better option then i dont mind going with that, i read sum bad stuf about it when it came out and this all i am going of, as i said this will be my 1st pc

as for the case ans power supply. i have just changed the build from one costing about 1400 to the one in my 1st post and the case and psu i picked out will not support the new build , this pc will be part of my home theater setup so needs to look ok and should be silver if you have any sugestions that would be grate, the store im looking at building the pc said i should have 750kw but you said 1000kw for psu so i will need to look into this,

i have not looked in to cooling yet, i am also worried about how much heat this is going to produce as this is going to be in my bed room and with just the lcd and x box and home therta system the room gets realy hot in about 15 - 30 mins of playing xbox i currently have 2 fans blowing air onto xbox and amp but looks like i might need a portable AC unit in the room which is just going to add to the power bill

also if you are nsw and can performe this build for a price let me know, as i think i can get the parts cheaper online than what the store is charging but i dont want to do the build my self as i have never done this befor

Re: mediacenter/gaming pc

check your PMs skunk... bottom line though>> if your display will be 1080p, you dont need to tri-sli or a top heavy 9800GX2. Just wait for the next gen GPUS, the transistor count jump is pretty amazing... Also, from the way it sounds, you're probably going to need watercooling(or similar) to manage the heat... even if not doing the SLI setup. Heavy duty gaming requires appropriate thermals, otherwise, you definitely reducing the lifespan of all that costly kit.
