Wide screen plasma TV and Dell 17" monitor?

I have recently purchased a AVS-600 HTPC! Brilliant! It is currently connected to my Panasonic 42" plasma TV. Works great. Now I have a ATI Raedon HD 2600 Pro grahics card which is capable of dual display. I am using a DVI to HDMI to connect my plasma and a DVI to VGA adapter to connect my DELL E173FP. Now I would like to clone the desktops so I do not have to turn the TV on. The problem I have is when I set the display to clone the resolution is set to the plasma's resolution. Is there any way I can clone with different resolutions on the two displays? I know I can in extended mode.
Thanks guys.

In short no. Cloning closes everything, resolution included.
