Pioneer Blu Ray..... I thought this would be easier.....
Questions that I have are right at the bottom... this first section is more of a rant of my experiences with Blu Ray
Hey guys finally took the plunge and got my Pioneer Blu Ray drive last night and threw it in my PC. First thing I did was upgrade my anydvd to HD and started ripping a disk.... SUCCESS.. chalk up one early victory for me. I was close to starting my happy jig before telling myself that I haven't watched a movie yet. When it came time to watch the movie I added it into My Movies 2.44 then went to play.... no luck. Out came the OEM cd and I installed Play Movie (omg can they give you less information on this product) and still no change. PowerDVD BD was next and still nothing.... ok back to basics, I loaded PowerDVD manually and I could play the movie that was in the drive still.... phew so at least my machine was capable of playing Blu Ray.
Finally I worked out the intricacies of connecting PowerDVD and My Movies together and could get My Movies in MCE to play a movie physically in the drive.... ok on to the ripped movie... what the... I need to have my ripped movie in ISO format which you can do from the Manage Collection option... ok sounds good... so I go to the managed collection option.... "You must have 2500 contribution points to use this feature"..... o_O..... Much eye rolling and a third party product and I had my ISO rip made.... more eye rolling and Daemon Tools and My Movies can now mount the movie (I think) but it STILL doesnt play. Then my time ran out and I had to give it a rest.
So I finally found where Play Movie was in Media Center (in the MyTV section under More MyTV) and can get this to play a movie that is in the drive but I cant see how this product can play an ISO image at all or integrate it into My Movies BUT it does give you full DTS sound out of the box and opens the video on the correct screen.
PowerDVD BD ONLY GIVES YOU 2 CHANNEL SOUND????????????? I'm sorry have I made a mistake somewhere.... how the F*&% can you possibly give an OEM product for blu ray that only gives 2 Ch sound that is just hilarious. Also PowerDVD BD ALWAYS opens up on my primary monitor which is NOT my TV. There are options to play with this setting that are GREYED OUT on the BD version and they want US$99 of my money to unlock the features.
QUESTIONS
- Is there a way to use the Play Movie product with My Movies?
- Is Windows Vista a lot less painful to play Blu Ray movies on?
- What other software setups do other Blu Ray drive owners run on their rigs?
- Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?
- Why did I do this to myself?
Re: Pioneer Blu Ray..... I thought this would be easier.....
As far as I'm aware there is no way to watch ripped BluRays at this stage. My Pioneer Bluray drive came with an OEM copy of PowerDVD Bluray Solution and PlayMovie. I only installed PlayMovie which allows me to use 5.1 surround sound. This was on Vista and I believe the same applies to MCE 2005. From my perspective the only way you will get the type of functionality you are looking for is if and when Microsoft ever decide to build bluray playback functionality natively into Windows. Assuming they ever do decide to do so it's unlikely they would even consider doing it for MCE 2005.
Re: Pioneer Blu Ray..... I thought this would be easier.....
PowerDVD used to allow you to play blu-ray and hd-dvd images off a hard drive. I think that's the reason they had their key pulled (pure speculation) and they disabled that functionality in the newer versions (which is why the iso mounting functionality was added to myMovies for HD playback).
Anyway, you can get the Playmovie plugin to do 5.1 by going into the audio settings and selecting SPDIF as the audio option (obviously only usefull if you're using SPDIF audio).

Yeah I could get 5.1 working on play movie but not on PowerDVD.

Ah thanks I will have to take another look. When I go to help on PowerDVD it clearly states that it is the 2CH edition though... maybe this would only be internal processing but digital out might give you surround....
Just to clarify people can mount ISO's of ripped Blu Rays and play them in MCE right? It is supposed to work.

You'll probably find that there are a number of different releases of PowerDVD with different price points associated with their level of functionality.

I'd assume if you were to find something that would mount the ISO such that it appears as a BD Drive then you could probably play it using PowerDVD or PlayMovie

So, how would playback of a Bluray movie happen over an extender?
Woud it be rip bluray to MPEG/DVR-MS?

I'm also looking into buying the Pioneer Blu ray player. Can AnyDVD HD convert the movie to an MPEG file?
