Universal Remote choice help

Hi all

I`m currently using 3 remotes for my tv, MCE and amp. I`m looking to replace these with one unit.
Now have done lots of searching and research and seems that the Harmony 880/890 seems to get good reviews and the 1000i looks sexy but think its just not that practical in shape/channel surfing etc.

I`m currently using my Imon remote which I have to say has been excellent from day one and I particularly like the mouse pad on it - comes in very handy at times.

Does anyone have any ideas on a remote that you can get to operate as a mouse too at times i.e. programmable keys etc? Not sure if the harmonys can do this?

Any help much appreciated thanks

J

Re: Universal Remote choice help

The Harmony's won't do a mouse type emulation, but they are great. I use the 880 and it does everything I need.

They're fairly easy to set up for basic use, but the web interface is a little sucky if you want anything complex. They also crippled the software so you can no longer make link codes from different devices to the one button (i.e press 1 and the lights go off, tv switches input, av receiver switches input) so you can only have the macro's it builds for you.

But even with all that I reckon they are a great addition to the home theatre.

Yeah, I found that too.
but at least now, when you press "watch DVD" from your system being in the "watch Live TV" activity, you can have the lights dim, Tv switches input, Amp switches input and then put the volume up a few notches.

I used to have heaps of different activities, but now with the media centre replacing the VCR/Set top box/DVDplayer/DVDrecorder/foxtel input, I don't have to change inputs on the Tv or AMP anymore.

I only have 3 activities now
Watch TV (turns it all on)
Listen to Radio (only turns the amp on with radio)
Watch TV in winter (turns everything on including the gas heater)

I like it!

I tried to get my 880 to work the reverse cycle ducted, but got bored eventually. There was something wierd about the remote and didn't want to learn it. Oh well, that was just for fun, the main thing is that it runs the honme theatre very well.

I use the Harmony 360 as I am using a Xbox 360 as an extender. Really happy with it, for $90 you can't go wrong. The activities feature is a little tricky to set up but once done works like a charm.

Maybe your air conditioning remote is wireless, so it works in any room in the house.
The 880 is infra red only, it can't do wireless.

Thanks for the thought, but definately IR. Actually the device was on the Logitech pick list, but using it and learning failed. Maybe one day if the mood and 4 reds takes me, I might have another look. But really it was just because I thought I could, not because I needed to.

I just went into the harmony site after 6 months, and now thay have an "add sequence" function.
So you can have multiple codes set to the press of one button.
e.g macro
