Hi guys

i have slowly been saving the money to build a media centre and now i finally have the box built i decided to purchase a remote. Its a rock RM-VR1 and I didn't noticed but its amde espically for windows vista media centre.

Everytime I plug the reciver in it asks for a Driver for a ehome infared trancever but i cannot find a driver anywhere. I have tried the updates from microsoft and trawled the net for hours last night. does anyone have any ideas for me ? I am really stuck at the moment

Re: Rock Remote

You could try forcing the MS ehome receiver to install. I'm not sure where to get the driver from, but it is around as people have used it to use the remote in plain XP.

Edit: Here's soem instructions I found:
Quote:
You can get them with the following procedure.
1) Download the Windows Update "Update Rollup 2 for eHome Infrared Receiver for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB912024)" from microsoft. It is available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en.
2) run the downloaded executable. When the Hotfix install wizard appears on the screen... STOP!! do not continue with the installation wizard.
3) run notepad, and open the file named kb912024.log that is located in your windows system directory (usually c:\windows\).
4) on the fourth line of this file you will find the path to the update executable (ie: c:\0d5602f37f532d2198a162164df6\update\update.exe) .
5) Open Windows and navigate to the root of this path (ie: c:\0d5602f37f532d2198a162164df6). There you will find SP2QFE. Navigate to this directory.
6) In the SP2QPE directory you will find the irbus.sys file. In the "ip" directory will contain the irbus.inf file.
7) Copy these two files to a temporary directory of your choice.
8) Go back to the Hotfix install wizard and select CANCEL. The wizard will ask if you are sure... answer yes. The wizard will clean up after itself.

You now have the native Microsoft eHome receiver drivers needed to install your MCE compatible remote.

Re: Rock Remote

This remote should also work with MCE 2005. I bought one a while back to try as I needed a spare remote and it worked fine. I particularly liked the small size of the receiver. However, whilst it worked well enough it couldn't power on/off the TV and it wasn't backlit despite the keys looking like the translucent keys on the MS remote. Rock do have remotes that can do the above and they look identical to the one I bought but I guess they'd be a bit more expensive in which case a MS remote would probably be better anyway.
I'd suggest there may be a problem with your remote or receiver as it worked with XPMCE for me.

PS - A WARNING:
Avoid the Digital Now remote as the mouse emuation function is horrendous and it's receiver is NOT compatible with the MS remote and the MS remote will NOT work with it's receiver. I bought one and on finding these problems contacted Renura of Digital Now who said that remotes are matched to receivers and I shouldn't expect the MS receiver to work with this remote, after this he has ignored my emails including my concerns about the pathetic mouse emulation.
Pretty poor support & service if you ask me which is a shame as my dealings with DN have been good in the past.

Re: Rock Remote

Here's their webpage for the remote

No drivers for it on the site but that doesn't surprise me as being HID compliant it would use MS drivers.

Here's their contact page

Good luck

Re: Rock Remote

there is no official XP Media Center support and the remote should be picked up as a INPUT device like a USB mouse or KB etc. If his PC cannot install it because it’s missing a file it’s his system that lacks the file not the actual remote.

Since XP Media Center is not officially supported, if it does not work there is nothing we can do in this case.

this is the response I got, does anyone have any idea what file is missing? I plug it into my standard winxp sp2 machine and get the same cannot find driver prompt. At least if I can get it working on one I can go from there.

Re: Rock Remote

Sorry to bump such an old thread but I do have a question -

How do people rate this remote? I plan to use it with VMC and am just about to buy it but would like to know if it is a decent unit. Hard to find any information on it, really. Will it be able to put my HTPC into S3 sleep and wake it up? Can I use it as a mouse?

Appreciate any comments regarding it

Cheers
