Imon display a piece a junk?

I recently purchased a Silverstone LC16M with the inbuilt iMon display, (and I'm tempetd to call it iMoan) Frankly the thing has been a major disappointment from day 1. Eagerly awaiting the LC16's arrival so that I could build my new gen MCE rig with Intel P35 mobi, Q6600 cpu, 2 gb DDR ram, and 750gb of storage to have the whole thing looking less than perfect was to say the least a bummer.

Basically the Imon, on firing up the system for the 1st time worked Ok, but after some hours I noticed the display showing garbage and the IR receiver not working. Power cycled the system, no change. Installed new version of S/W from Soundgraph, no change. Uninstall S/W , power down for 10 mins and re-installed S/W, all good again for a couple of hours then the same prob. Have tried all the available S/W versions including the beta but still the same problem. Have done this 4 times now. Reverted to MCE IR receiver until I can get this sorted.

So is the problem that I have got a faulty unit or is the Imon product just not reliable? I have seen a few other posts here and on other forums that suggest there is something inherently at issue with the Imon product. What are other experiences and solutions?

I am not looking forward to dismantling the whole system to return the case to Altech...aaarrrggghhh

Re: Imon display a piece a junk?

Hey man

Yes they arent the best and do cause various problems.
OK, now with your case, remove the LCD from the case and check that the solder points on the back of the ICB isnt touching the case and shorting out. if so just add some tape or some other insulating thing to stop it.
My mate had that problem with the same case.

Also after building many HTPC's with the iMon LCD & remote, I have found that the display is kinda useless, hard to read at distances & the software / remote is laggy when using it withing MCE & VMCE. I have replaced it with the OEM Microsoft IR & remote. works very well & very responsive.

Hope that helps

Re: Imon display a piece a junk?

hey dude,

this is a brand new case purchased only 2 weeks ago and I have been "inside" quite a bit. The PCB is not the prob in this case, its got a strip of clear plakky on the back and is well clear of only metal bits. The fact that it works for a bit, up to several hours, shows that a simple short is not the issue ,but worth considering so thanks for that. No, this is more like a silicon problem that is either breaking down due to heat or just bad manufacturing. So i guess i should just send it back and get a refund and go for a case that I can fit the MCE IR receiver inside along with my RF keyboard receiver.

seemed like such a good idea at the time....

BTW way I didn't think the display was that bad..I could see it reasonally well from 10 feet and found the info useful

From memory is cabling running throug the ferite donut? I seem to remember some similar posts with regards to garbage characters when users either remove the ferite donut or it wasn't there in the first place.

Now that mention it, no it isn't. I wondered what I should do with that during assembly, and never did follow thru. I'll install it today and see how it performs. Will post the results here in a couple of days... stay tuned

Re: Imon display a piece a junk?

Well it took about 7 hours to spit the dummy this time. Unfortunately the ferite ring doesn't appear to be the answer so it's back to square 1. I'll give it another go, and route the cables differently but I'm not confident.

I'm still of a mind that it's more serious than just interference because not only does the display go spastic but all functionality associated with the iMon unit goes west including the Funtion dial which as you would know controls volume amoung other things. It stopped working as well.

Re: Imon display a piece a junk?

Hey there

This is probably not going to help you at all but it sounds like you may have an iffy imon.....mine just worked straight out of the box.

Just for interest is it connected via usb to an internal header on the board or is it using an external `normal` usb.... might be worth trying the other to rule it out.

Could also check to make sure that there are no power management settings enabled for the usb hub it is plugged into i.e. "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" in device manager
