Help me troubleshoot my Hardware Issue - Freezing HD
Hi all
First off I am a Mac user that has ventured into Windows world for the "ease" of MediaCentre.
I have been running my MediaCentre for about 18 months and have added to an modified it over time.
I have two SATA drives and a PATA drive. The system has started to freeze once or twice a day. This seems to have started after I did a defrag on all three drives. I was able to run CheckDisk on two of the drives, but one of them, the newest one, 300gb, seems to freeze at 1 or 2% when I do the check disk.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to try and isolate which drive is causing the problem and how I can resolve it?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Cheers
ZP

Re: Help me troubleshoot my Hardware Issue - Freezing HD
Hi Zippy,
Does the system log have any drive related errors in it?
The other tangent to go off on is SATA I/II jumpers on the 300GB drive. The Foxconn site isn't helping me look at the specs of your board, but I suspect it supports SATA I. If that's the case, some drives may not automatically set themselves in SATA I mode & if that's the case, they may need to have a jumper set to force it.

Re: Help me troubleshoot my Hardware Issue - Freezing HD
Thanks Justin
I replaced the SATA cable for this drive and it appears to have solved the problem. Although the Checkdisk did take around 24hours to complete for a 300gb drive. Sounds too long ... but all seems to be working now. Fingers crossed

Re: Help me troubleshoot my Hardware Issue - Freezing HD
Maybe promising. A long checkdisk may have corrected the old errors introduced due to the cable - I had that with a PATA boot drive a month or two back.
Have a play with HD Tune & see what sort of results you get for each drive. It helped me identify my AHCI issues in this thread.
