Team Blackbolt have put out a new skin for XBMC, its called Vision and looks like the best Media Centre skin on any platform to date. You just have to check out the screenshots! Of particular interest is the second last one where you can have a graphic for a TV Show folder.
More info, the funky stuff it does now with Movies and TV is incredible! If you have been diligent with your TV series and have then stored like:
\TV Shows\Showname\Season x\01 Pilot.avi
It can bring in the overall show info like cast, storylines, season synopsis and episode recaps from tv.com and store the data for when you're oflline too! How cool is that!
It also does it for movies too, automatically bringing in all the data from imdb! Movies are displayed with the coverart.

I'm off to download and play around. This aging platform still takes some beating as a media player, and complements my main Vista Media Centre very nicely.

hey ExtremePC,
i'm wanting to make the XBMC a media center extender, and i've got my hands on Media Center Extender for XBOX (haven't used it yet as i'm waiting to get my xbox modded), do you know if a modded XBOX is able to play xvid, divx and/or mp4 h.246 through the Extender interface (as most of my movie collection is encoded with these formats) or is it limited to MPEG2 files as i assume it would be though a non modded xbox???
that skin looks cool... its actually derived from a homemade vista wallpaper thats been floating around for a while. Part of the interface looks PSP ish but still, quite pretty - even prettier than xpmce i'd dare say
when project 'Pika' wraps up(gen2 media extenders) theres talk of a Vista patch that will mess things up a bit for the gen1 mcxs. One effect is mcxs will no longer to play with vista + xp rigs simultaneously, just vista. I know this patch will do this for the 360 as well, not sure about the xbox
Im not big on mcxs anymore....its much cheaper to build an el cheapo salvage parts rig running xpmce I can see the attraction for xbox/360 users though

XBMC has nothing to do with XP Media Centre and does not work as an extender to MCE, its a Media Centre on its own. As for types of files it plays back, XBMC has the rep. of being able to playback almost every common video and audio format, here's an extraction from the xbmc wiki.
NOTE: That it will also play video or audio files from within archives like ISO's, rar, zip etc. It will even play a single video file seamlessly from a multipart rar set!
Supported output media formats and devices:
TV-output: 50hz/60Hz NTSC-M/J (America/Asia) and PAL (Europe/Africa)
Widescreen (16:9) and normal-TV (4:3) aspect ratio video output support
" ? " = Undetermined (the Xbox-hardware may or may not be too slow to decode at an acceptable frame-rate)
" * " = Working with acceptable frame-rates most of the time

XBMC with the Project Gotham III skin looked better than MCE or VMC let alone with the Vision skin.
That does not matter in the slightest as all xbmc uses xp or vista for is as a smb share, if ms want to stop sharing files between Vista and XP then there are going to be a lot more people baying for blood than xbmc users.
I don't see how an el cheapo rig can be cheaper than an 2nd hand XBox1 ($80-$120) + modchip ($25) + HD cable pack ($30) + XBMC software (free), besides will the el cheapo rig be capable of 1080i component output that is rock solid with no over/underscan? and with optical 5.1 output? Methinks not.

I am disappointed you missed (at least I cannot find in your shortlist) a video type that XBMC will playback - .3gp or the file format used by many mobile phones that are video capable . I found out recently its play these back.
It is worth noting playback of dvr-ms SD files is great however, dvr-ms HD files are not watchable. This is not surprising given the hardware is only a 733mhz PIII.

I didn't miss anything, I said I did a copy paste from the xbmc wiki. If they missed it its a different story, but anyway pretty impressive for a bit of free software that really does just work out of the box so to speak.
