CPU heatsink and fan recommendation please

Hello

Now that summer is here my stock cpu cooler is way too noisy. Can someone recommend a quiet cpu heatsink and fan? It needs to fit on to an Athlon X2 6400+ and fit into an Antec Fusion case. I am looking at the Artic Cooling Freezer Xtreme but it looks pretty tall or maybe the Noctua NH-C12P. Any thoughts on these?

Cheers

Re: CPU heatsink and fan recommendation please

Scythe Mini Ninja is the most popular choice for a Fusion/NSK2480 case. Many people run with the case fans alone (no CPU fan), but a 6400+ might be a bit much for that.

I use a Thermaltake TMG A2 - large fan that spins slowly & the added bonus of allowing more air flow from the side mounted case fans to the northbridge.

Re: CPU heatsink and fan recommendation please

About 30 minutes ago I finalised mounting a Zalman CU7700 in one of my rigs. I would have preferred the Noctua which performs cooler but Cnet does not stock them and I couldn't be bothered ordering via Pccasegear.

I have set the cooler with the fanmate 2 to min. revs, ca. 935 and the temp is hovering between 25 and 30 degrees. Bugger that the mobo has to come out with Zalman.
Also the case with Noctua. Scythe can be mounted without taking out the mobo but the connection between the cpu surface and the cooler surface will not be so strong as with a re-enforcement plate mounted underneath the mobo and will increase temps with ca. 3-5 degrees.

I use the Scythe Shuriken.

It only has a height of 64mm, it is whisper quiet (I can not hear it at all), and keeps my CPU running @ 30 degrees.

I think it cost $60.

Re: CPU heatsink and fan recommendation please

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have ordered a Scythe Shuriken. I like its low height and quietness even at full fan speed and it's it is reasonably priced.

It looks good - if I go for a Micro Fusion 350 or GD02 case, then it will be the pick.

It's certainly smaller than the CPU cooler I use

ROFL - talk about overkill. I can't remember, do you run it passively, or do you have the extra 2 120mm fans?

So, including PSU(?), you've got 5 x 120mm fans in the system? Is it an HTPC, or an air conditioner?

Re: CPU heatsink and fan recommendation please

I installed the Scythe Shuriken today. It seems very quiet. The only problem is that I can't use all of my memory slots with it. It overhangs one of the slots and my Corsair RAM with the heatsink is very tall. I will have to run it with less RAM. Hopefully I won't notice much difference.
