HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

Hello all.

This is my first post in this forum, so if I'm doing anything wrong please let me know.

I've just built a Home Theatre/ Media Centre PC and I have no audio.

The HT/PC is as follows...

MoBo - Gigabyte MA78GPM-DS2H
CPU - AMD AM2 x2 4850e
TV Tuner - Hauppauge HVR 2200
DVD - Pioneer 215
WiFi - Linksys WMP300-N
RAM - x4 1GB Sticks - A-DATA DDR2 800
HDD - WD Caviar 250GB SATA II
O/S - Windows Vista Ultimate
Case - MIC X-Box 893

The MoBo has HDMI A/V out and is connected to a Yamaha RX-V663 AV Reciever via a HDMI 1.3 cable.

The Yamaha is connected to a Panasonic 42" plasma via HDMI and outputs audio to a set of Accusound PS100 5.1 surround sound speakers.

After building the PC and connecting everything correctly it seems as though I have no sound. The picture is displayed perfectly on the plasma from the PC, but no sound.

I know the HDMI cable is not faulty as I have checked two cables so far and of course it is able to transmit the picture.

D-SUB/HDMI is set in the BOIS as it instructs in the MoBo manual.

Any assistance would be appreciated,

Thank you.

Re: HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

look in your BIOS for a setting to change audio put from SPIDF to hdmi.
On my Asus board it was under on board hardware config.

you also need to make sure that the HDMI output is set to default in the audio properties of the Control Panel in Windows.

also some motherboards have jumps that you need to change to switch from SPIDF to HDMI with SPIDF being the default.

Re: HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

I have almost the same amp, speakers and TV setup. This amp doesn't support HDMI audio, it's simply a passthrough device for your monitor. Drove me nuts working out what was wrong. In the end nothing was wrong. The amp is doing exactly what the manual says it does. A passthrough device only. I ended up bypassing the amp HDMI altogether and going straight to the TV and running fibre out from the mobo spdif.

Re: HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

So I'd imagine it's just a matter of connecting an optical cable from the output of the MoBo to the reciever?

Fazz1977, you said you have almost the same reciever, which optical connection in the back of the reciever do I use?

Re: HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

There's 2 on mine and a coax. Currently the coax is running my DVD, and one optical for my TV, I'm using the "DVD" optical for my HTPC.

All of the inputs are configurable in the amp manual setup menu. You can assign any one input to any one channel. You can't assign an input to 2 different channels though.

Re: HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

Not to familiar with connections on Panasonic TV's, but if your TV has optical output, simplest thing to do is run HDMI from HTPC to TV, and optical out from TV to receiver..

Had to do this on an install I did, worked a treat.

Re: HDMI audio problem through AV Reciever

Many optical outs on the back of TVs will only work for the internal set top box and nothing else. Others can do 2 channel pass through such as my new Samsung LCD which will not pass through the audio signal from my HTPC from the HDMI to the optical out if it is in SPDIF mode. It will only pass through the 2 channel PCM audio from the HDMI of my PC or other inputs such as my Wii.

My receiver can not handle the component signal of the Wii so I have to run it direct to the TV which means the audio has to go to the TV as well as it is all in one cable. But the optical output from my TV carries it to my receiver perfectly so there is no problem with that. 5.1 audio from my media centre PC requires a direct cable connection to the receiver...
