Std E8400 fan too noisy?

Hi,
I've just bought myself a core2duo E8400. I'm putting it in a Silverstone lc17 case with a supposedly silent zalman 460w psu (see intro forum for the rest), and the whole lot is going to sit in the loungeroom next to the tv. Should I try the standard fan with the E8400 first, or is it really that noisy that I should go straight out and buy + mount something quieter from the very start?
(I was thinking of a Scythe ninja mini - not too big, not too expensive).
Thanks
grogalong

The stock fans for the C2Duos are four-wire PWM controlled ones. If your mobo supports PWM control of the CPU fan (most do), then these coolers can be very quiet, particularly if the overall case cooling is adequate. So I would try the standard fan first and see how it goes. You might find the LC17 case fans give you more noise than the CPU one.

Should be a "New Thread" button at the top of each forum listing page .

Re: Std E8400 fan too noisy?

Thanks TheRob. I'll give the stock fan a go.

I see you have a HVR2200 tv card. How is that working out for you?
I was thinking of one of those myself.
Down here in Melbourne, channel 31 only comes out in analogue. So I thought I'd set one tuner up in digital, and the other analogue (until I get sick of ch31, then put them both on digital).
cheers

The HVR2200 has been great so far. I've only just installed it to replace my DNTV Dual Hybrid S2 card (which was giving me some lost tuner issues). Channel change time are very quick and it seems like a good solid card. Option to put it in a half-height case might prove useful down the track as well. There are cheaper cards out there, but I'm happy I went with the HVR2200.

I use mine as a dual digital tuner. If you want an analogue/digital combo you'll need to hack Vista cause out of the box it only supports either analogue or digital tuning spaces, not both.

Re: Std E8400 fan too noisy?

As noted above
the standard cooler runs quiet if you enable PWM
I just built one last week, however i soon replaced the cooler with its 1000rpm fan (using PWM) with an XP-120 and Suscool fan, the 120mm fan spins at 300rpm.

G'day grogalong

I'd say check out the sound levels from the stock cooler first.

I built a new box on Thermaltake's DH-102, Intel's DP35DP and the E8400 a few months back myself. I started out replacing all the case fans in the Thermaltake as they were just too loud for me - generally during quieter moments of movie viewing was when I noticed. Upon doing that (replaced the stock fans with Noctuas), I then found the box cooler and fan with the E8400 was my next source of annoyance! I went the Noctua route again with the NH-U9 (the NH-U12 is too tall for my case) and its included fan and all is now well. I still struggle with vibration isolation from my HDDs (which I've vlad has mentioned he doesn't suffer with his DH-102 although different drives) - but fan noise is now a thing of the past for me and the internal temps of the box are good - and this is sitting inside an A/V cabinet as well!

Cheers
Heyw00d

I use the Ninja Mini with the E8400 on one of my machines and it's perfect. Never even warms up (though I don't game). I thought the stock fan was a bit noisy.
