ECS 8200A Build!

but i was wanting to know if you had run like 3Dmark 03/05/06 on the ASUS board?

Can you run it on the ABIT Board?
Thanks. A bit odd.

Anyway, I'll run 3DMark on both after I've got both up & running (the Asus will have a BE2350 though.

The Asus was almost cool to the touch. I might switch the heatsinks if my fan strategy doesn't work - the problem with the Fusion/NSK2400/2480 layout is that while the fans are big & good, all the heatsinks are orientated 90 degrees the wrong way for good air flow. I've switched my fans to 1 in 1 out to try & get a bit of a swirl through the case. We'll see.

The numbers surprise me a bit - it feels faster than the Asus, but the numbers say different. The RAM number is the biggest puzzler - it's the same RAM! Also, the CPU seems to be idling around 40 degrees C (was 30ish in the Asus) - sounds a bit like what Pantonious was seeing with the ECS. I might do some further tweaking in the BIOS.

Off to set up the Asus on my desktop now.

Justin
Justin,
If you take the heatsinks off, maybe check the GPU part numbers and/or take photos to see if it is the same device on both boards?

Cheers, Paul

Re: Anyone using ABIT A-N78HD?

Well, the Abit has got a few issues. After doing a proper test yesterday, I discovered that it won't wake from S3. If I get a bit of time, I'll investigate further over the weekend, but if it is a specific anomoly, it's probably down to having a tuner in the PCIe x16 slot.

Also, had another unexplained crash last night. Not convinced it was heat, so I went in to the BIOS & manually set the TRFC values for the RAM to 105ns (this was a fault on my previous Abit board).

More testing today, but it looks like it needs some BIOS fixes before it's a real option. I'll image the system drivers of both it & my desktop & then swap boards & soldier on with the Asus for a while.

Re: Anyone using ABIT A-N78HD?

Hi Justin,
You are right about the tuner problem and the PCIe 16 slot. I found the same thing with the HVR2200. It works fine though with S3 in the other PCIe slots.

Cheers, Paul

Now people will understand why I'm advocating the (hopefully) upcoming Gigabyte GA-M78UM-S2H with its 2 PCIe x1 slots.

Re: Anyone using ABIT A-N78HD?

I've logged the fault with Abit & asked for a beta BIOS ASAP (like that's gunna happen).

Re: Anyone using ABIT A-N78HD?

Had to move the Abit out of front line duties & put it in my desktop PC (with the Asus going back in to the VMC). I can't live without standby now & it has one or two other minor issues (BIOS related). On balance, the Asus is currently more up to the job.

Re: Anyone using ABIT A-N78HD?

Well, the Asus has had a BIOS update that boosted its video RAM to 512MB - much better.

The Abit on the other hand.... I found a beta BIOS for it yesterday & loaded it up. S3 still no go (with no PCIe cards installed), but I'm told it might be due to my KVM. Need to do some more testing today, but a couple of other problems I had seem to have vanished.

Re: Anyone using ABIT A-N78HD?

I have tried a Phenom 9750 in my AN78GS. No go. It works in safe mode but not in normal mode - Vista seems to hang just before the logon screen. Any ideas? I also bought some 2Gb 1066 DDR2 which works ok with the old 4400+. Do you I need to reinstall Vista (yuk)?
